What are your thoughts on chopsticks?

So i asked for a fork at some asian restaurant and i got told by a mates misso that im too "white" what a bit** the fork is superior in every way. Why eat with plastic/wood sticks when you can eat with stainless steal!!!! What are your thoughts on this?

Sushi is perfectly acceptable to be eaten by hand. There are no cultural offenses committed by using your hands.

Well I am relieved to learn that you do use chop sticks! I am more familiar with the Chinese culture and they typically do not use the hands except for limited food items. Chinese will raise the bowl to the mouth as they tend not to bow to their food. Also makes for shorter distance between bowl and lips.

I was referring to Sushi, specifically. Where Japanese culture would apply, not chinese. I certainly wouldn't eat my chicken and broccoli with my hand

I've lived in Asia, and can eat just as quickly with chopsticks as with a fork. Even the rice is not safe around my plate!

I see what you guys are saying on this thread, but I'd rather just use a fork. It's easy to use and there is no learning curve.

wow, thats impressive. i always thought only the head chef/owner would be japanese, and all the servers would be locals.

guess you can simply ask them if its fine to use your hands, but i'm sure they won't mind. most restaurant adapt to the local culture instead of sticking strictly to the owner's culture. even the recipe may be slightly different. i always assume that sushi in japan will taste quite different from sushi elsewhere in the world.

personally, i hate getting my fingers sticky and oily.

That's the case for most places. But there are a few here that are extremely traditional, and they're the best places in town. Those are the ones I go to.

Kind of like the metric system. Simple for the world. Too difficult for some of us(usa). Destroy all spoons and you'd learn the art of the chopstick quickly.

Apparently you don't have kids, cause there's a hellacious learning curve on forks. It starts at about 8 months and they finally get it down around 4 or 5 years old.
