    Rotator cuff tear

I mess up my shoulder and neck in april.. stopped lifting and did 2months of PT. recently went back to the gym and the pain is much better but chest exercises seem to bring pain/tightness in the neck/trap/scalene area..so i finally had an MRI and turns our there are a couple small tears in the rotator cuff.. but oddly my shoulder hasn't been hurting with exerise and has been feeling better.

i am confused if i should stop working out and rest more or continue a light modified program and how would that look?

doing weights really helps with my depression and structure in all areas of my life..
so i hate to stop again.

    any ideas? thanks!

i read the MRI report on the shoulder ..it appears there is a complete tear and some retration on the tendon- the superspanatious tendon.. while i am waiting for an orthepedic appt and taking MSM wondering if it is still ok to try to work out- although it hurts a bit-
    thanks

i saw an orthepedic surgeon today around the shoulder- he did recommend surgery.. said it will be painful and i wont be able to drive for 2months (since i have an old stick shift) also said arm will be in a sling 24x7 for about 6 weeks and the full recovery time can be up to 8months. I am going for a second opinon at a really good dr but he isfull until the end of novemember- my question/concern now is how hard is this going to be able to do on my own? i dont have any family here and not very many avaialble friends. ..right arm is dominant arm and would like to know how others have delt with doing this kinda thing "stagg" and is it going to be possible to get back into some gym routine once i get healed? the dr said if i dont take care of it the muscles may atrophy- also said if i wanted i could wait 4months and get another MRI but since it has already been 8 months since this happend.. ican't imagine 3 months it will magcially reattach its'self? and the longer i wait the more retretracted the tendon will become.. he did say i had good range of motion so i would be likely to have a successful surgery- any feedback and or ideas would be great! thank you

OMG that does not sound like fun.. I need an MRI so bad. I am in your same boat. I am avoiding doing this until i can deal with getting small..

My advice is get advice from a few before you make a decision.

    How are the MSM crystals?

unfortunately tears don't heal on their own, do the surgery ASAP and stop wasting time. I feel bad for you, I hope you find new friends to care for you and keep you company. but you'll be fine after you heal, don't stress yourself too much, stress slow down the healing process. best of luck to you.

it will be odd to be able to use only my left arm for a while. i will have to find a way.

i am looking forwward to actually getting better.. driving at this point hurts. so looking forward to weds. I started seeing dr's in June and did 2 months of PT and finally was able to get the mri- i wish i had pushed them sooner- i would be back at the gym by now! thanks for the encouragment and supporrt!

I have a tear too! Got a cortisone shot in it and that helped incredibly...for about a year and a half. I'd stay away from the excel sizes that hurt and work your way around it. I did that for years and oddly, I have zero pain in the shoulder, it's like the tear never happened.

from what i am learning there are different degrees of tears..some partial thickness some full thickness .. and i guess the one i have is a "complete tear" and the tendon is retracting .. ..but i looked again at the mri yesterday and i read it as 2/3 complete tear with retracting tendon.. i have heard from several sources the dr i am seeing on weds is one of the best for shoulders - the surgeon i met with this past tues was kinda not so positive about surgery although he rcommmend it. - i am looking forward to meeting the dr on weds to see his approach as i have heard from 2 other medical professionals he is the best choice.. and his office said the consult will be an hour..which sure beats the 10mins i had on tues.

wondering what questions i need to ask? also my rbc is a big "high" for female but not too bad from the low dose test.. wondering if that would be an issue around surgery and healing?
    thanks

don't worry about coming up with questions, sounds like this doc will know what to do. keep us posted, and good luck with the appointment.

i will check it out.. oddly this tear started years ago before training with an active life. 10yrs ago it was only a partial tear- and i am not sure what happened at the beginning of the year.. i suspect i wont be able to get back to the gym into the new year- depends on what dr says on weds.
i suspect this all started with a bad fall skiing years ago- who knows ..right shoulder has been an issue or a while..

it didnt help when i went to the dr for the 2nd visit after 2 months of pt asking why am i still in pain and his reply is "your over 40 it takes longer to heal and watch your posture" finally i got an mri and he called ad said.. no wonnder you are in pain you need to get your shoulder fixed this has been going of for too long you started seeing me in june.. " we'll if he would have taken me seriously in the beginnning and upon my return visit it might havev been fixed by now.. but he didnt i wonder if that is because i am female on low dose of testo. i tell you these dr's dont know what to do with themselfs when then find out a women takes testo-
