So whats been going on in Calgarian's life

This forum is like another family to me. I think its a good time that I share whats been going on in my life.
After 1.5 years of doing Project manager / business analyst and senior developrs' job I got fired recently. I was in charge of 12 programmers and was very protective of them after the dismissal they stopped talking to me. so after working approximately 60-70 hours a week finishing a project that was on going for 2.5 years I got fired and the reason was given to me cause I went and talked to IT director to whom I was reporting. I suppose to keep my spirits high and stuff but it is very very hard. I cant sleep so doctor gave me very strong sleeping pill and yesterday I slept for 16 hours. I am thinking of opening my own IT business any ideas? I will talk to labor relations but my first priority is to find a job and then do the rest. but anyone have ideas about how to start your own IT business? whats hot etc?
I have already talked to lawyer and she said because they get you sign the contract when they hire you you can not sue them.

I am in the masters program for business. And also have a double minor with computer programming. The first thing you need to do is figure out what kind of business you would like to open. I just had to do a 50 page thesis paper on opening a business and the hottest computer business right now would be computer repair. I would go along those lines if youre looking to open a business similar to it. Its a good start.

Thats a good route to go. It might be hard to go into competition with your previous employer though, since they already have a name for themselves. Have you. figured out who your target market will be? Like large companies, small businesses, or more like home businesses? And one thing ive learned is to not limit yourself to what your company can do. You may also look into adding a division to your company to deal with home computer repairs. Most people prefer to take their computers to businesses to get them fixed rather than taking them to a large corperation like bestbuy.

No thats the idea I am fiddling with plus I need to come up with something that is not present in the market and business needs it badly. I need an idea thats all rest I can do myself. I need to figure out what is missing or in demand and off I go create it. any place website etc that will give me this ideas?

You will have to start small and build up a reputation. Then you can slowly expand.

Thats going to be something that youre going to have to research. You can find almost anything on google haha. But honetly thats going to have to be something that you come uo with. I co own a large business and own my own smaller business. The main thing that would help my business is better networking between different branches in the company. Make it easier to get information in without having to redo everything.

That probably does not help much.

good to hear from ya Cal!

sorry to hear about the job man, that bites!

i hate anything to do with computers, so i am lost on this one!

can you do any mapping, GIS type skills? the oil and gas industry has jobs like this, just a suggestion

what about doing security type software things for small companies, etc....? seems the way of the internet is the hacker, so you may want to look into any types of biz like this to get up and running.

Calgarian have you considered the expat route? I'm an American expat in the UAE and here they pay quite a bit to expats for their consulting and training expertise. Worth a look.

I wont be much help with IT ideas, but are there any associations up there for IT professionals? If you haven't already, you may want to look into it and join one.. Lots of good networking with others in your field.

You could also try dubizzle.com, kinda the local version of craigslist. The workforce over here is at least 75% expat, and the emirati locals aren't known for their IT literacy I'm sure with a little digging you can find a place for yourself

Wow, sorry to hear about all the BS and bad luck. Careful with the sleeping pills, they can be habit forming because they seem to work so good at first. Are you taking Ambien?

Best of luck and hopefully someone can help you out a little from here.

Sorry to hear that but remember it will get better if you keep working at it. Life seems to like to see just how much you can handle sometimes. They say it helps define who we are. Personally I think it just SUCKS and would rather just skip past those times and enjoy life a little. It seems every I try it's 2 steps forward and 1-3 back. I keep moving forward though because giving up is just not an option.

Sometimes it helps to give yourself a time out. Do what you can to forget what is happening even for 1hr a day if you can, without the need of alcohol or any substance. Read a book, watch a movie but keep your brain busy. It doesn't hurt to have someone close to talk to. Thats what friends are for.

Hard to think anyone with your experience would be out of a job for long in Cowtown.
