Of course. All of our "work vehicles" are RWD and being in the Midwest we see plenty of snow.
Yep, can't get anywhere without them.
Depending on what vehicle I'd still say drop a few bags of sand in the trunk for the additional weight. "Work" vehicles usually have equipment in the trunk which improves traction
Goodyear Duratrac would be my choice, and that's what's being installed on my truck as I type this.

When concentrating on snow mainly, a wider tire is not a great idea. It's the same concept as a snow shoe. I taller more narrow tire seems to work best. Also concentrate on a large amount of siping (the small lines cut in the tread). These provide much better traction on snow than the big blocky lug tires that are more meant for mud.
Other issues are that they are typically not a long wear tire and generally seem good for about a max of 40,000 at best. They also tend to not offer as much traction on dry or wet pavement as the more standard all season radial.
The reality is that RWD cars are not near as good at getting around in snow as a FWD or AWD no matter the tires used. It's a weight issue and the pushing vs. pulling. You def. can add weight to the trunk to help to a degree. We usually toss a cpl sand bags in the trunks of the cars and they also can be broken open and used to assist in traction if you become stuck.
Don't you drive one of the luxury sedans? BMW or Mercedes...something like that?
I use snow tires with metal bits(spikes) bored in them so they bit even on ice for my car that's fwd...my two trucks need a decent all season tire cus there 4wd...
Ive just got a bmw a few months ago and im not looking forward the snow at all.
Thats what im worried about. I love the car but winter wont be fun. Its an automatic, not sure if thatl make any diffrence?
Does your auto box have a snow mode? Some do, this will help a lot along with a slab of concrete in the boot or maybe some heavy db's lol. Snow tyres should help as they have more rubber in them than standard summer tyre which have more synthetics.
The more rubber content helps them be softer in winter rather than hardening up like summer tyres. Just be easy with the accelator and you shouldn't be too bad. Most of the rds over your way are generally heavily gritted and salted
If your Benz has 2nd gear take off, that works wonders as well. I use it in my caddy all the time.
Number one thing to remember you get a situation where your stuck its the same principle as sand, let the air out of the tires until you have about 10 lbs of air. Make them look like they are almost flat and you will have much more traction
I've good reports on these new winter tyres what are hitting the UK and also seen some remarkable YouTube videos. So fingers crossed I will be mobile or at least be able to get home
like Lunk said, instead of getting winter tires, maybe you should get a winter car!
this one looks pretty good.

Marcus, just buy and old 4x4 truck to drive during inclement weather. Leave that beauty of a Merc. in the garage when the white shyt hits the ground.
Hey Marcus, what's your typical snowfall? 2", a foot? Anything under 6", you should be ok. Hills obviously will suck. Just hit an open parking lot during a snowstorm and practice some skills. Lol
Get the feel of the car in snow. It's fun, trust me.

Let us know how it goes with the new tyres. I have a merc and bmw, so both rwd, and it's true in the snow that they are rubbish. If hadn't spent some time slaloming in the snow in Chicago in the winter I would be put off and get an awd. But I have considered winter tyres, but never knew if they helped enough to be worth it, so please do update.
