    Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays

My wife tipped the waitress more for lunch today because she wrote Merry Christmas on the bottom of the ticket instead of Happy Holidays. It brought up the discussion of how the traditional phrase is being phased out of schools and other places.

Which do you say (if either) and why? Does it matter?

For me personally.... It doesn't matter. When someone says "happy holidays" - I take it as they meant it for the whole holiday season..... Thanksgiving, christmas, haunakah, New Years.

Someone may also say "happy holidays" if they don't know if you're Jewish or not.

The extra tip was nice of you guys tho :-)

I say Merry Christmas in response to happy holidays at retailers. Every clerk quickly respond with merry Christmas back. I think the sales ppl are instructed to say happy holidays - it's safer then dealing with an upset customer. I wouldn't be offended if someone wishes me happy kwanza or happy Hanukkah. Seriously. Some ppl take themselves too seriously.

It sucks if people don't say Merry Christmas because society has made them feel uncomfortable about it, otherwise, either is fine.

traditionally there was only "Merry Christmas and Happy New Years" no offence but all the rest were added to be politically correct. my hat's off to your wife, it is what it is, its Christmas. so Merry Christmas everybody, and you may have a great New Year!

Merry christmas cause im a catholic in a Christian country. People who migrate to other countries need to except the customs and traditions of the country they move too. Do what you want in your home but out in the streets respect the countries people

HAW would cut my itty bitty balls off. I've got some nice pics of her in lingerie showing off her 110lbs and full C fake boobies but she has forbidden me to share those.

What a party pooper she can be.

I was caught off guard today and responded to a Merry Christmas with a Happy Christmas. I'm so awkward.

The Brits have it right: forget Happy Holidays, just wish people Merry Christmas | Heather Long | Comment is free | theguardian.com

A good read. We are Christian countries!!!!! and minority's are the smallest percentages of the population. no one is stoping them from there celebrations don't make us change ours. I would not go to Sadi arabia and complain that no one eats pork. I accept the local customs.

I've often thought the attitude toward this stuff is good here. Everyone is happy that it's christmas - time off work, seeing friends and family, etc., and there is generally not very much religious overtone at all. The small percentage of people who are believers go to church services, and that's about it. In fact, England is not a terribly religious place (59% say they are christian, but less than 12% of all religions attend services of any kind, and 25% say they have no religion), but people don't all get upset that somehow, there is not a holiday greeting that caters for their particular set of beliefs. Everyone just says happy christmas, and no belief in gods is implied, it's just friendliness and good wishes, and it works.
