    shoulder shrugs. Barbell vs Dumbell?

I always feel awkward using the barbell, even when doing light weight, so I've switched to dumbbells. Anyone else have this problem?

Do what feels best for you, if your gym as heavy enough DB's then do what fits your groove best

Thanks for the input. I feel my technique is better with arms at my sides

Arms at side with dumbbells will give you a larger ROM and a deeper stretch at thebottom, but generally speaking barbells will allow you to use more weight. As Marcus said, use what feels best. If your gym has it use a trap bar it's the barbell that you can hold by your side like dumbbells thus keeping the neutral grip.

Best of luck to you! Build those traps to your ears

I'm exactly the same, shrugs are awkward for me using barbell. Been using dumbbells predominantly for a while now and personally think it gives me a brilliant hit, still throw in the barbell every now and again though just to change things up.

Dumbbells just feel more natural for this movement.

Dumbells feel better but I can shrug a lot more on a barbell. I believe this is true because you have a better ROM with dumbells. Also dumbells feel more natural, less stress on back it seems.

I use dumbells mainly because I don't like the bar dragging over my junk....or if on cycle, I like it too much which can prove awkward. hahaha. I usually use dumbells with wrist straps to help pull more weight or; like someone else suggested, a trap bar is also a good approach.

Dumbells mostly but my gym has trap bars that I sometimes use. I like to change it up.

I love the bb but yes the bar sliding close to your junk is scary and annoying. bb feels better on the traps for me vs db. I do both though.

whats helped me is the squeeze at the top and always drop set

I do both the rare times I do them like once every two/three months. Traps grow quick for me. For bb so it does hit ur junk bend ur knees a bit, not a lot just a bit and ur good to go.

You might have to bend just a little....But I might have to bend a little further than comfortable to keep from hitting my junk. LOL
