Stop taking NO supplements if you're having eye surgery

I'm having LASIK eye surgery done this summer and have been doing a lot of research. I came across this study From 2007 were a bodybuilder suffered blood vessel hemorrhaging in his eyes. The cause was attributed to an NO supplement that he was taking.

I don't think so. That's not a study and mere assumptions. Hedge words are plentiful in that abstract. The cause was NOT attributed to NO's. "May cause" is silly at best. Locate the full article and keep in mind, it's just an article.

There are no adverse reactions. I doubt this "Bodybuilder" disclosed everything he was one. This is likely excess RBC related.

But yes, if you're going to have surgery, obviously try to remove as many variables as possible.

You are correct that this abstract is not a study, it is a case report. I accept that all variables possible should be removed prior to surgery. Also, I'm in agreement with you that there are many hedge words used with the hope of swaying the reader's opinion. I will be more judicious in the future when posting articles in this form.

However, I disagree with you when saying that these are merely assumptions. These are observations, and observations are the basis of the scientific principle. I also respectfully disagree that I can not make my original statement, that there are adverse reactions from NO products during eye surgery, and that this is likely RBC related.

This case is likely related to the blood thinning compounds commonly added to NO products. Before LASIK surgery the patient is asked if they are taking aspirin or other blood thinning medications. People do not often associate supplements with medications.This is likely due to the fact that the companies who produce these supplements do not have to adhere to the same FDA rules as prescription medications. This leads to roughly 40% of over counter supplements being unreported before surgery.

Patients on blood thinners ideally need to discontinue taking these medications for one week prior to surgery. Blood thinners increase the chances of hemorrhaging from LASIK because of the intraocular pressure increase during Lasik. I should point out that Lasik is essentially a blood free procedure, since usually there are no blood vessels in the cornea. Yet, there are blood vessels at the edge of the cornea.

Post the full article, I am happy to debunk it for you. There are abstracts that claim Vitamin C gives you cancer, too. We could go all day, but without the full article, this thread in its entirety is rendered fruitless. And I agree with Bonaparte, your thread title is pretty silly.

Keep in mind, OP, that LASIK surgery has been happening for quite some time. You're talking about 1 observation, from 2007. Millions of procedures have been performed since then, probably close to 50 million to date.

Correct. I feel as though not many people know that NO products contain blood thinners, or that there use before a medical procedure may be harmful. These supplements aren't governed by the FDA therefore most people undertook there potential side effects.

Here is the article. I have thoroughly read it and will admit the it does have holes in the case it presents, just like any article. As I stated earlier I will be more judicious in future forum postings. This is my first experience in a community like this and I look forward to contributing and growing with everyone else.

Yes I totally agree. I'm not to say that this is an epidemic. Only that people should not use NO products before medical procedures.
