I know it sounds ridiculous, but all over the world the rectal administration of drugs is used. Most suppositories are prescribed for local effects such as treating constipation or haemorrhoids. The anal route however provides an excellent route for drug absorption and therefore can be used in patients with swallowing difficulties or for drugs where avoidance of the stomach is preferable e.g. NSAIDs. Additionally by avoiding the stomach the drug also misses the liver and therefore in many cases more of the drug will get into the system and a lower dose can be administered. Completely hypothetical- but by bypassing the liver and stomach, would this not be a better way of taking hepatotoxic substances (i.e. d-bol)? More effective, cheaper, and easier on the system/liver.
Anyone heard of this done before? Or maybe there's a reason why this would not work?
