    Bacon and bodybuilding

Anyone have any thoughts on this? lol A lot of people use to say the yolks from eggs were bad for you... so now im wondering how people feel about bacon... I have heard somewhere that animal fat is good for testosterone.

Well...... For starters bacon is loaded with sodium ( about 800 mgs) and the fat is mostly saturated in the form of cholesterol. I enjoy it a few times fried with eggs and home fries. It definitely has no place in a bodybuilding diet.

IMO it's fine, but I'm not a strict dieter. It's good to have some fats in your diet but as buster said it's loaded with cholesterol and sodium, so it still needs to be eaten in moderation.

When I couldn't eat to gain, I started using bacon for breakfast for the calories. Used it for 2-3 weeks straight before I decided it made me feel like shit and haven't really enjoyed it since.

Bacon is made with a special salt (pink) that cures it. I love bacon but it does not love me. I can take the same cut of meat..not cured...and grill it with some BBQ sauce and it agrees with me (liempo in the Philippines). Something about the pink curing salt that does not like me.

Dietary cholesterol do not have a direct impact on cholesterol in your body.

Saturated fat is one of the main drivers of testosterone production in the body. My test levels changed fairly significant with pure dietary changes.

So your advocating a higher saturated fat diet?

I knew something like this was the case but wasn't sure, didn't want to say anything without my facts straight lol.

Not sure I am advocating it but if someone asked me what I would recommend that would be one of the things I would look at.

Saturated fat is definitely less "evil" than the media/FDA has promoted in the past couple of decades. The real problem comes when you combine sat fats with high-GI carbs. That's why paleo/low-carb type dieters tend to have decent lipid profiles: even though they're devouring meat, they're not putting it on a bun.

Bacon is pretty nasty, though. In addition to the sodium (water retention), it's full of nitrates. While our body makes it, I think the jury's out on whether the chemical version is worse.

Eat it as a treat. And avoid turkey bacon. That crap is just nasty.
