Hard Leg Day + un-needed CPR

Well I have not been on this site other than to view it due to traveling and having to use a company computer most of the time. I just wanted to share what happened to me.

Well it started with me coming back to the states on rotation from Chile. The gym I have been working out at had nothing for a true leg day work out. I had to rely on cardio and lunges which I think are satin in the form of exercise.

So I went back to my gym and went balls to the wall on my leg work out. I was a beast. Well after I puked (way I know that I had a good workout) I stood up way to fast and passed out. A guy thought I had a heart attack and without missing a beat went right into doing CPR and calling 911. I didn't need CPR and due to being in an adrenaline rush along with a bad 911 operator I got CPR for 20 minutes until the ambulance showed up.

So I ended up in the hospital with totally destroyed lungs that bled out 3.5 liters of blood, fractured sternum and several fractured ribs. I had to be placed on a vent for 6 days and 14 days in the ICU. Now I have been on Short Term DI from work and on bed rest for a month now.

So I guess what I wanted to say is take a CPR class and make sure that there is an AED machine (which was there at the gym), before you start CPR. I go see the doctor again for a follow up and hopefully be able to return to work next week.

Just wanted to share and I hope this will help someone take a CPR class

I forgot to say that I took on 5 nurses after they took me off my vent. I pulled out my Cath and all my lines. I thought I was being trapped by the government and being held somewhere. The drugs they gave me were great but one I apparently had a reaction to and made me aggressive as hell. I did take up a lot of cookies after I saw some videos of what my wife and family took of me.

Thanks lov, kel and Girly for your nice comments. A month in bed sucks. I cant wait to get back into the gym. I have lost so much weight. On the plus side, everyone likes my beard I have grown in a month. Skipped right past the itchy stage.

That sucks - I'm sure the guy really thought you were having a heart attack. Broken ribs and fractured sternums are so common with CPR. I sometimes think some future civilisation is going to come upon a cemetery and wonder what the hell this culture was like, where all the skeletons' ribs and sternums are cracked. Hope you have a speedy recovery.

you passed out for how long just from orthostatic syncope? I'm assuming you were breathing the entire time, which makes that bystander and 911 operator REAL shitty.

How did it take 20 minutes for even first responders to reach you at a gym? That's an ungodly slow response time, even for the most rural areas.

Obviously someone never had CPR lessons since that's the 1st thing they teach you is to check to see if they are breathing and if there is a pulse.

Wow, that's insane. The national standard for a BLS response time is 4 minutes!

I would have thought that all gyms would require their employees to take a CPR class too.

went back for return to work and found out I have pneumonia and I am on oxygen and some antibiotics. I am feeling so much better.

Yes both the person and the 911 operator were stupid. He gave them the wrong address to start with in a panic. 20 minutes is total BS. I had my wallet in my shorts and they still listed me as John Doe and my insurance card was given to them by my wife and the hospital put down self pay. This has been a cluster in action.

Now to top it off my wife TOLD me that she only wants me to go to a major gym where she goes on occasion. FML.Im hoping she does not go to Just for Women... OH well, Happy wife happy life until I go overseas again.

The EMD surely would've told the guy to check for a pulse, which in my state you do every two minutes as the AED assess the rhythm. That would've been the first thing the EMD would've told the guy to do.

I know everyone makes mistakes, the EMD probably didn't mess that up. I've been in the medical field for years and have never seems wrongful CPR. However, that's not to say it couldn't happen.

I think the most likely scenario if it truly wasn't just beast mode syncope (new medical diagnosis, ill publish it in a few days) then the guy probably watched too many movies and checked for a pulse in the wrong place and couldn't find it.

The extent of your injury from this situation is extreme, and warrants that legal action be taken against somebody...either the bystander who wrongfully performed CPR or the 911 operator/dispatcher who incorrectly directed the "treatment".

What happens if you suffer long term effects from this that affect your ability to work or function as you did prior to this?

Look into the Good Samaritan laws in your jurisdiction to see if you have a case. Or speak to a lawyer ASAP.

I don't know about other places but I'm sure glad I have a bag valve mask because I'm not kissing no strangers, life threatening or not, my son I would if I didn't have any equipment with me.

Doing much better. Here is the BS that the AHA is putting out now on TV. The guy does feel bad about hurting me and took a CPR course and the first thing they say is dont do CPR unless you know what your doing and first shake, look listen and feel. Not what is in the commercials.

That commercial is just trying to drive the point home that layperson CPR is now recommended to be done with compressions only, and not with rescue breaths via mouth-to-mouth.

The reason for this is mainly because the AHA determined that many members of the public were hesitant to perform CPR because they didn't want to put their faces anywhere near a stranger's mouth.

Understandably so. If you've never seen a person in cardiac arrest, it's very common for there to be blood, vomit, and other fluids in the person's airway. It rarely happens as it does in the movies where a person just goes unconscious and looks like they're asleep. It can be a pretty gross sight.

None the less, if this guy is CPR certified he should have known to check for a pulse and figure out if you were breathing before doing compressions. Figuring out if CPR is even indicated is a pretty important part of the class.

Be honest here are you angry at the bloke? He may not have known what he was doing but he still tried to help his fellow man. He could of just finshed his sets and left you there. When i learnt to do cpr they told us that the person needs to feel like he has been hit by a train upon gaining conscious.
