    Antacids stop working?

Hey guys. I was diagnosed with bad gerd a while ago in which it felt like food was stuck in my throat. I was put on pantoprazole which worked for a good 6 months or so then stopped. So I changed to omerprazole which worked for a few weeks lol then I changed and currently on lanzoprazole. Which is /was working great. But the last few days I can feel some acid coming back into my throat. So my next step is perhaps nexium. But any other suggestions. I'm currently on 30mg lanzoprazole so 1 tablet daily which I tajw in the morning.

It might be because I'm on holidays and eating lots or a lot more fatty food or whatever I'm not sure. Maybe I've put on weight around the throat . lots of variables but its pretty annoying.

    Thanks.

Sounds to me like your problem isn't medication not working, it's your gerd worsening. That's pretty aggressive. Fix your diet, Roger. Fix it now.

When u say fix it? What should I be avoiding? I'm on holidays ATM and for another week so I'm eating whatever and you guys in the US have some mad food here hahhahha.

I generally eat clean and a bodybuilder diet year round. Oats chicken fish tuna steak rice etc and when I cleaned my diet up for this holiday (3 month cut) I didn't have any gerd issues funnily enuf

Would u suggest just sticking to the lanzoprazole or should I get a box of nexium?

Those aren't antacids (Tums), they're proton pump inhibitors.
Try adding in a histamine-2 blocker like Pepcid or Zantac and chewing some antacids before and after meals.

Do a google search and lookup foods that aggravate reflux and ones that help prevent it. Holiday season or not, you just need to decide if you want to stuff yourself or feel better, lol.

What's the difference bro? I just know I get no food stuck in my throat feeling if I take ppis.

    Anyone else get reflux/heartburn etc?

Also what exactly causes this issue besides food? Like any idea why I've been getting it for 2 years or so now?

It sounds like H pylori, check the s/s for that.

Helicobacter pylori is the main cause of ulcers! You need antibiotics to kill the bacteria,so talk to your doctor about it,cuz if it lefts untreated for a long time,it can cause cancer.

    H. pylori: What Is It and How Does It Cause Ulcers?

I don't have any of those symptoms . besides reflux entering my esophagus and causing redness . I assume diet related /excess weight I've put on and not being careful enuf.

lol, MrFreshmaker. Well, of course they're different. To some people, breaking a rib is pain, to others, a scratch on the arm is pain.

What your doc said is exactly what an ulcer is. The most common fix is treating H.P. with antibiotics, multiple antibiotics.

I had horrific GERD until I tried eating Paleo, and it vanished overnight. Turns out carbs and grains especially aggravate it. Any time I reintroduce grains it comes back after a couple of days. Other carbs are OK in moderation, but still cause random flare ups. Might be worth giving Paleo a shot.
PPIs have some nasty side effects with long term usage, and GERD also is associated with precancerous lesions in the esophagus, so you should try and solve it at the earliest.
Oh and never ever lie down with a full stomach.

PPIs essentially stop the production of stomach acid.

Antacids are just a base (calcium carbonate) that neutralizes some of the stomach acid.
A proton pump inhibitor directly reduces acid production at the source (the proton pumps).
And an H-2 antagonist blocks the histamine receptors in the GI tract that can trigger acid production.

Acid production and digestion are both regulated by the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic response (fight or flight) causes digestion to slow, but acid production to increase. This causes heartburn. So stress, stimulants, etc will aggravate the condition.

And H2 blockers will keep foods that your stomach is sensitive to from triggering an allergic response and overproducing acid (since increasing acid production is your stomach's way of protecting you from pathogens (things that might do you harm)).

    Thanks for that.

Question tho. How come ppis stop working for me and I have to get on different ones? They seem to just stop working one morning then I gotta get another type. On my third so far. Also why is nexium so expensive compared to the other 3 ppis.
