In the end, carbs = sugar. It all ends up the exact same as glucose and glycogen travelling through the bloodstream or being stored where they need to be (and of course if you really over-eat them you'll begin to convert them to fat and store the fat).

So yeah it's more or less needed for athletic performance, absolutely necessary no but relatively foolish to completely eliminate carbs.

The problem is that things like coca-cola and lollies have a high sugar content with no satiety so it's really easy to over-consume 'carbs' from these sources, say 50g from one can of coke, it's not going to do anything to keep you full, 50g of carbs from rice will fill you up significantly more. This is the only issue for the average person when it comes to sugar (carb) intake. Diabetics being an exclusion and needing to refer to glycemic index etc.

Edit: AKA yes eat some 'sugar' and enjoy your life just use moderation.

    Woah woah woah!!!!!

Not all sugar is the same technically. Yes, glucose belongs with the saccharide family as well as sucrose. They even share an identical empirical formula, but their digestion and utilization is vastly different. And I'm just comparing the most rudimentary sugars (monosaccharides) to each other. Glycolysis is how our body uses glucose for energy in laymen terms while fructolysis is how fructose is spent. Very similar activities considering they both use the same proteins and even share a few intermediate enzymes.

I don't think any real detailed information is helpful to explain it, but the thing to keep in mind is glucose can be used for cellular activities indiscriminately, but fructose metabolism occurs predominantly within our liver cells (hepatocyte).
