Lean Body Mass (Lean Weight) or Total Body Mass (Total Weight)??

Just wanted to see everyone's opinion or thoughts on this. When calculating (if you do lol) to determine how many calories you need for weight loss, maintenance, or weight gain, do you use your lean body mass or your total body mass? Meaning, do you find out your bodyfat and subtract that from your body weight to determine your calories needed? Or just use total body weight? I can see arguments for both and wanted to see what the general consensus was around here.

I've used total body weight ever since I can remember but in thinking recently, wouldn't it make more sense to use lean body weight since fat really doesn't "burn" calories?

Thanks and I appreciate all insight!

I always used total but then again I always need to adjust my calculations a little to fit my actual maintenance
