    Gyms better than comedy clubs

As many know, I train at home, but have now had two occasions in the last week to visit a public gym. Tonight had to take my son to a friends birthday party at a nearby athletic club. It's a pretty expensive place and has a well equipped weight room. With nothing to do but kill time while the kids played laser tag I decided to wander around, and must say this stuff is hilarious! Toothpick leg guys barely busting out one assisted rep on bench.....then sure, let's add more weight, see how much the spotter can lift. Everyone else in general just heaving and flopping weights around and accomplishing nothing. I need to bring popcorn next time. There was one guy who had a good build and clearly knew what he was doing...just zoning out on his headphones and doing his best to get some work done around the toddlers playing with the weights.

At least they are doing something. You don't become a advanced lifter overnight.

I used to work at a local gym. Something's have changed,as now most have headphones and it is less social. But a lot has not changed. You see people lifting chest then biceps and triceps every other day and the same regiment over and over. Lift their egs once or twice a year and see no results. I would try to give some advice and you would see them try then revert right back to old habits. Some workout just to feel less guilty about their chocolate caramel crapaccino enema and super sizing their value meal.
Oh well, staying in shape is hard and takes discipline and a plan. I think we as humans struggle greatly when it comes to hard work, discipline, and plans. If it was easy everyone would do it. The information is out there. The internet puts an unlimited amount of information at our fingers. I remember when Weider's encyclopedia was my go to book. I suppose all we can do is keep on trying and continue to spread the word.

What kind of gym has laser tag at it?

That being said, I really don't give a shit if the other people at the gym know what they're doing or not. I could care less if they ever put a single ounce of muscle on or not. The only thing I give a shit about is if they're in my way (and if their presence is causing the gym to be too stuffy and humid or not). Oh yeah, and if they're fvcking up the equipment too

I was thinking the same thing lol.

Imagine explaining the membership cost..... Lol

    - 50yr old man "wow..... $100/month. Sounds kinda steep....."
    - Gym sales person "yea well we have unlimited laser tag so....."
    - 50yr old man "say no more"

Hey some of those people in the weight room would have accomplished more of a workout had they just gone over and played laser tag! Yeah, this place has everything including a nice cafe, it's more of an indoor country club then a gym. I can't justify the price myself, but a lot of people love the place.

If you're looking for a little more of a hard core environment, you may want to find a new gym, otherwise, you can expect those kinds of guys taking up the space around you.

I applaud anyone that gets themselves in there, but it can definitely be annoying when you're trying to go all out and the 'less intense' crowd is taking their time on equipment and doing 23 sets on a machine you want to use.

It's not my gym, was there for something else. Honestly, I may make fun of people in my head but I'm as nice as can be and happy to give advice to anyone looking for it. Trouble is, most guys in the gym won't take advice and are convinced that they know more than others even though they've been doing the same workout for years and gotten no results. Honestly, I don't even advise weight training to people who are just looking to start a workout program to get in shape. For guys who currently do no exercise at all, I think the best start is to get started with body weight only exercises. Push ups, pull ups (can do assisted pull ups with a chair if not strong enough yet), body weight squats and lunges. Get a little more advanced and work into dips and hand stand push ups. You can get seriously strong and in shape with just simple body weight exercises. Weights can come later once a good base is established for those who are interested to going further. Gyms need to make money though, so they'll never tell a new member that he's better off saving his money and staying home to do push ups. They're happy to take his money and give him a cookie cutter routine to loosely follow and get no results.

I don't applaud just anyone who goes because a large majority only go to socialize or to say they went, not actually do or even plan on doing anything.
