Red face Meaning of the word 'queer'

This morning I went to a Christian church out in the Irish countryside, and as I sat at the back near the door, one of the pastors came in wheeling a pram/buggy with two little kids in it. Usually when two kids are in a pram side by side, one of them is noticeably bigger than the other, but these two kids were the same size. Here's how the short verbal exchange went:

    Me: Twins. . . ?
    Pastor: Twins!
    Me: .......that's something
Pastor: It was a queer shock when they came

So basically there's still some people in the world using the word 'queer' with its original meaning.

    Yes.
There are 3 loves in my life: my wife, my English mastiffs, and my weightlifting....Man, my wife gets really pissed when I get the 3 confused...

Actually you may have misheard him and he actually used the word "quare" which can mean unexpected in this context. I think that would make more sense!
