If your diet is spot on using natural foods, that will decrease your need for a lot of supplements like vitamins, creatine, heck, even protein powder to some degree.
I get the controversy as both can cause GI issues particularly on an empty stomach. Caffeine is a diuretic & some folks like the water retention/ volume they get from creatine so I see where the claim might have come from.
For me, if I’m dragging, caffeine is the strongest pre workout I’ll use. For morning workouts it’s an absolute necessity for me.
