Homosexuality isn't something new, it's been around for thousands (if not millions) of years, and this is one reason why I'm perplexed that most of the world's biggest and oldest religions don't accommodate this variation -- especially seeing as how it isn't that rare. The odds of any given person being gay are about 6% . . . which is rarer than left-handedness but not nearly as rare as red hair or green eyes.
I say 6% because most estimates are in the range of about 3% to 10%. The figures are a lot lower in Muslim countries, but a lot of people such as myself think that's simply because gay Muslims are less likely to come out publicly. I'm going with around about 6%.
Today I was at the gun range chatting to a guy who was in the army and is now retired in his 40's with a full pension because he took a spinal injury. We were talking about the army in general, and we got on to talking about women in the army. He tells me that about 80% of women in the British army are lesbians. I challenged him on this figure, and the conversation went back and forth a bit, but he wouldn't budge from his stance. He firmly believes that about 80% of the women in the military are lesbian.
I think it would be really interesting if there were a full in-depth documentary made about lesbians in the military, I think it would be very interesting. Maybe the interviewees would have to have blurred faces and masked voices to protect their identity, but still it would make for a very interesting watch. Not sure if Michael Moore would take something like this on.
What are things like in the US military?
