You're going to hate my answer...cook it until it's done. Seriously though it's a inconsistent thing. Use a fork to puncture the potato and see if it's done. If it's soft it's done...if you can feel that it's still hard them cook it some more.Originally Posted by monster.
When using a microwave...move the potato around ie) reposition it every so often so it can cook more evenly (even if you have a rotating plate).
yams this time of year (in canada) are HUGE, im talking bigger than a softball, so I usually cut it in half lengthwise, and pop the half in the micro, and cook until the middle aint hard anymore, usually takes 3-4mins...but it depends on the micro.
I cut the yam in to chuncks and micro for about 8 mins depending on at home 1100watts to work 800watts, it veries.Originally Posted by northendninja

i hate them microwaved. I put the oven on 400 and put them in and check them every 15 minutes untill done. You can poke a toothpick in them and when it goes through smooth and you see the potato on the toothpick you know they are done.
I never noticed until recently how high in sugar yams are. No longer a night-time snack! I tend to lean more towards pinto beans. A few less carbs and double the fiber for about the same serving size. You can pick up canned pinto's with no salt added which only has 10mg of sodium per serving.
