I'm hearing all sorts of opinions on this at the gym . . .
One guy says the heels should be in front of the bar, another guy says it should be behind. What do y'all say?

As long as your knee doesn't go past your toes you are fine. So however you feel comfortable while in the smith machine then do it.
I agree with Mud as long as your knees don't travel past your toes it's all good. I like to vary my foot position, I may be wrong but I like to do that so I hit the muscles from different angles. I threw in Sumo squats this morning for something different.
'Preciate the info . . . guess I'll take a close look at where my knees are going next leg day . . .
Tock......I would think if your heels are behind the bar then it would put your knees in front of the toes.....I agree with mud and jugg about toes in front of the knees......I don't do smith-machine squats much, but when I do, I have my feet in front of the bar....I only use the smith when I want to go butt to the floor squats.
keep ur feet parellel in front of u and come down untill ur quads hit the plain of 90' degrees
