Usually he'll keep working up, until his spotter is doing deadlifts while he assists. The most i had seen him "try" (or his spotter i should say) up until this night was 365, ass high off the bench, spotter gasping for breath and pulling with all his might.
Anyway, tonight this idiot decides it's a good idea to go for 405 after he "hits" his single of 345. The spotter lines up and lifts... it goes down alright with a heavy guide. They start to lift, and get around 4 inches up before it comes crashing back down. He's stuck screaming under 400 lbs, unable to move or breath. I walked over and pulled 2 plates off the near side and the other side crashed down. The emt's from upstairs came down and took a look at him, then they sent him to the hospital.
Personally, i was glad to see him go. Life is great when people get what's coming to them.
