Kicks to the Groin
When sparring in standup arts, do you always wear your protective cup? I have to admit, sometimes I try to get away with as little protective gear as possible. It seems to be restrictive to my strikes. Does anyone have any stories about taking one in the when sparring?

Not exactly stand up, my first week taking BJJ we were working passing the guard. My partner brought his knee down on my boys and it felt like baseball bat beating them into the mat. Ever since that day...I will always wear a cup.

I wear a cup all the time. If you find one restrictive try wearing a pair of Speedo swimming shorts over it. Don't use the heavy guard which boxers use either, the plastic jock strap should be good enough for martial arts.

Yesss, wear a cup. Inside roundhouse go high, push kicks often go south of the stomach. Many fellas love to drive a knee into your gear while passing through your guard. Arm bars don't feel so hot either when your nuts are being crushed not to mention armbars are a hell of a lot easier to lever with the extra pressure and fulrum of a cup added. Many BJJ and thai fighters get so used to sparring with rules they forget the obvious. Many street fighters WILL target your groin, AC joint, laterall aspects of patella, and the throat. Would sure suck to get dropped by some POS on the street because drove his steel toed boots into your nuts while in a good fighters stance.

It's like the American Express card, I don't leave home without it.

Dude you're crazy to not wear a cup. I had the same exact experience as Swole up there, BJJ guard pass and got a knee right in the twig and berries. Uncool. Never went without since
