I'll be moving out to the westcoast (L.A. area) in the Fall and will be looking for a bjj / vale tudo school. Does anyone have any recommendations besides the gracie accademy?

No I would love to train there..just looking at options. I've heard Beverly Hill Jiu Jitsu is also top-notch http://www.bhjjc.com/ Genki Sudo trains there.

I went to the class with my brother and one of our friends and the guy we know that teaches the class was showing us some more stuff after the class ended. He basically picked up my 300 pound brother and tossed him to the mat and my bro twisted his ankle and now he thinks its broke. It swelled up like a watermellon instantly. It looked like it hurt like hell.

Are you talking about ju jitsu (Japanese) or Brazilian jiu jitsu. Ju jitsu would probably be closer to Aikido. BJJ is closer to Judo ground work (newaza).
