starting boxing monday
so i got hooked up with a gym owner old mauy tai champion owns a gym, u can do everything man , judo, jujitsu, mauy tai, english boxing, karate, kun fung, its a place that has everything. and im starting boxing on monday.
they call it english boxing, but its just standard boxing like in US. never really boxed and im going into class monday having a look at thursdays and i wonder if theres anything i should learn / practice get a idea of before i start so i dont look like a complete dick k thx i wanna do boxing for cardio and reflex so i figure its best. im not a fan of mauy tai. takes alot of time and dedication to master aswell as hard to lift while learning / training and im a fan of straight boxing nicer in my opinion. just any heads up would be nice so yeh.. sounds fun and exciting
thx foska

Really extra cardio will help alot when first starting so you dont look like a dick. Its way to much typing to describe shadow boxing drills plus we dont know how much you know or anything like that. Go in and be humble and you will pick it up fast imo. Your starting very late in life so if you looking to get into it for self defense, cardio etc its great. Not being a dick but its very very hard to be competetive in boxing when starting as late as you are. God luck

im not sure how often people spar or anything, this is just classes 3 times a week. i dont really wanna spar at first.. just wanna learn how to move and use your weight ect at best. and it will rip me to peices as far as cardio goes imo. wont really be competetive

I would go buy a jump rope and get acquainted with it.
At the gym I train at it is used very very often for a few rounds of warm up 3, 5's.
If you have never jumped rope and are like everyone I have ever talked to who was in the same position. It is something that looks really easy, isnt SUPER hard but is very frustrating while you become comfortable with it.
If you buy a plastic/rubber one wear shoes for a while, haha. The first couple times it hits your toes isnt so bad but it sure as hell stings after the 10th to 15th time. And it just makes the frustration even worse.

When you see a boxer with great footwork its beautiful, I doubt they will throw you to the wolves to soon.

I didnt see any sparring for about 4 months and I was at the gym 4-6 times/week. It is very important that you are not put in the ring to early (even if you think you are ready) because you can become what is called "punch shy". Basically, if you take a big hit early on, it kind of gets inprinted in your head and you start doing things like blinking or cringing when punches are thrown at you instead of dodging or counterpunching. Its important to learn footwork and head movement before stepping in the ring.
But its great for conditioning, you will have fun.

Ahhh the noble art... a good trainer will soon sort you out, there is no secret other than constant repetion till all the movements become second nature, continueing to punch a bag while youre exhausted will train the CNS to adopt the most effecient punching movement i.e. you will remain relaxed during the movement till the final imact, combined with the footwork, combinations etc Boxing is a def a good core subject for mma and just downright handy to know.

sparring at first...
depends on your trainer....your state regulations.......in massachusetts.......u cannot even be in a ring sparring unless u are liscensed boxer........its like 50 bucks and it covers you for a million dollars of insurance if u were to get ur head punched in....no one will force u to spar.........you ready when ur ready
