Kicking the outer thigh.....
When you are striking the outer portion of the thigh, are you hitting the common peroneal or the sciatic nerve?

The common peroneal is actually just above the knee.

So you are doing damage to the sciatic nerve, correct?

Correct. Here's a muay thai article:
One of the Thai Fighters most feared weapons is the powerful roundhouse kick, unlike most martial which use kicks, tend to use the foot as the attacking weapon, however the Thai roundhouse kick use the whole shin bone as its offensive weapon. When the kick is launched at the opponent, the whole hip is pivoted, like a rubber band throwing the whole leg with speed that if completed correctly and makes contact, can break a forearm or shin bone.
If the kick is aimed at the thigh and hits the sciatic nerve, it can cause temporary paralysis for a few moments to the opponents leg, making him unable to stand or walk. The Thai's rightly state that; "The foot though a weapon in its self, can easily be damaged because of the small bones that make up the foot, but the shin is a large and powerful bone, and when conditioned can become as hard as wood
