martial arts for a beginner
i've never really done martial arts for a long period but i've decided to get into it and have my weights training geared towards somthing. So i've come up with maybe doing muay thai for striking and krav maga for more realisitc street fighting. what do u guys think a good martial art/arts would be ? at this point i am looking fit in 2 or 3 sessions a week.

1st. Muay thai is an excellent striking art. Very cardio demeanding and will put you in amazing shape.
2nd. Krav maga is good if your teacher either learned it from in isreali special forces teach or is an ex isreali special forces teach otherwise its probably trash. Muay thai or bjj would be enough to handle most street fighting situtions.
3rd. I personally dont think you will gain anything from trying to learn to martial arts and only going 2-3 times a week thats my personal opinion you would be better off focusing on one and then adding another one when you become more profficient at that one martial ie muay thai then training two of them at once.

i have already started the krav maga and it seems pretty good taken by ex israeli and police. The muai thai is a lagre local place that has amateur bouts every friday night. I do want to fight and i want to take it pretty seriously, i mean how many times a week should i train ? given i goto gym 4 times a week and work fulltime. I am 25 have a solid weights history and am fairly fit. any advice would be helpful

If you truly want to fight I would suggest no less than every other day. What do you prefer so far, the Krav of Muay Thai?

You would be much better off taking a ground art such as bjj that doesn't focus so much on weapons disarment etc like krav maga and in my opinion echos brown ninja at least every other day.

If you are going to be concentrating on fighting, then you need to gear your weight program to such an endeavor. Although max strength is beneficial, much more important in your training should be acceleration (plyometric) training. You need to be able to accelerate you fists and legs as quickly as possible in order to achieve maximum force on target.
That being said, try concentrating on lighter weights with faster speeds, plyometrics, medicine balls, bodyweight exercises, etc. Better yet, get a personal trainer who used to or still fights.
Also, you can cut down on your steady state low intensity cardio, if you do it. When you fight your heart rate is far above what it is when you are running 5 miles. It is more like sprinting, stairs, sandbag exercises, strongman stuff.
Best of luck to you. I got respect for any man with the courage to step into a cage, ring, etc. knowing the other's only goal is to put a hurt on him. I have shown maximum respect to all those who I have beaten and been defeated by.

Just local stuff in my area, nothing big. To advance to the big time you gotta have a little talent, which I really don't. I just enjoy the sport. I think most of the time when I win, it's more because I worked harder or longer than the other guy. I trained for about a year before I even considered fighting, so I had some decent MMA experience. Some guys will jump into the cage with 1-2 months of good regular training.

^ A year of experience?
I wouldnt dream of letting anyone fight with less than a purple belt. And thatll take about 4-5 years.
I comend you on going in there bro. But 1 year just isnt enough.
You would be much better off taking a ground art such as bjj that doesn't focus so much on weapons disarment etc like krav maga and in my opinion echos brown ninja at least every other day.
krav Maga is an interesting martial art. But honestly now.
Realistic? Dont think so.
Brasilian Jiu Jitsu realistc when it comes to streetfighting? Absolutely!

I know our coach wouldn't even let us spar with the muay thai or american boxing until we had some time under our belts on the bags and pads and had demonstrated fairly good grasp of the concepts and techniques. You don't wanna send someone too new in to spar, because generally if two new people spar each other, technique has a tendency to quickly break down into a gloved street fight.
WAR you changed your avy, I didn't even recognize you

I teach my classes Monday thru Friday. A lot of my students come every day. If your serious everyday and even practice forms and moves at your home.. Martial arts is nothing to take lightly..

I wish I had the time to go everyday. A lot of the classes around here are at night, but I work night shift, which makes it very difficult. I basically had to give MMA up to concentrate on getting BIG

Dude I tried to do that for a little bit, but then you get pushed around big time by guys who are weight training. It takes an immense amount of dedication and really hard work to make it in MMA, probably more so than any other sport. Since I am such a hard gainer, I just try to hit the bags from time to time now and spar when I can find a partner, but I mostly concentrate on getting BIG
