the bottom line is you wont make that much money even some of the guys fighting in the ufc are only getting 2-3 grand a fight. you have to be big time to make a lot of money. Or open up a gym, but you will not have the experience o do so.

Well, it seems I lucked up and ended up in a show for January 16,2010. I just called the promoter and told him my stats, my MMA record 0-0, height, weight all that good stuff. I have pro wrestling exp but other than that nothing. I am going to check on a couple of schools that are here in my area tomorrow one of them the guy was trained by one of the gracies and the other school one of the gracies is a trainer there. If anyone wants to check me out on the fight card check it out at http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/mma....0-f8ea2ba57955

and the promoter site for the actual card is at
    http://www.ubcfighting.com/index.html
but he has not updated the fight card yet.

    Question
anyone in MMA have any good techniques or helpful info to get me through this fight would be great. Wish me luck and let the training begin!!!

PS my name is Evan Burgess.

Unless you are a talent and have the luck to be seen by someone who is important, therefore someone who has connections, you might lose only your time.
    Good Luck anyway

I think the best way to get good at fighting in MMA is to:

    First, practice MMA

    Second, fight MMA

    NOT:

    First, fight MMA
    Second, then learn MMA

You should train before you fight not fight before you train. I don't understand why so many people do this. I understand you have wrestling experience but if you haven't even grappled a BJJ guy you may get your arm ripped off. Wrestlers leave arms hanging all the time.

Good luck and I hope you kick some ass...

To make a real living in MMA you just about have to come from another sport these days and be at the top of the game there. Most of the top MMA guys these days ( the ones making any kind of real money ) came from high level Jiu-jitsu, kickboxing and wrestling backgrounds. They kinda of found themselves in MMA. These days its even harder because everyone and his brother wants to be an MMA fighter. A recent survey of my small town list 4,000 MMA fighters.....lol The actual number of real MMA fighters is closer to 15-20 and 4-5 of them train at my school.

Now there is a new breed of MMA fighter that starts off wanting to be in UFC. Nothing wrong with that but you almost have to start at a very young age. Say 15-16 and train 4-5 days a week for years. If you are not at least purple belt level in BJJ and don't have at least 5-6 years of boxing or kickboxing under your best, don't even think about it. Even some of the local guys here have 10 years+ kickboxing and are brown belts in JJ.

Imo not a good idea. Aside from the fact you don't have any training, if you put on a crappy fight the promoter isn't gonna be happy and you hurt your chances of getting another fight.

How good is your stand up? How good is your wind?

If all else fails just do the PILEDRIVER!!!!

Not a good idea buddy. A good highschool wrestler would probably ride you to a ud. I only say that because its a very common background. Worse you find a ex college wrestler who is learning the other aspects of the game and your in for a long night.

You should pull out and start going to class. Most schools wont let you compete to your at least a high blue belt(most want you to be a purple) unless you have some crazy talent. You didnt mention any kind of amateur wrestling background.

Worst case you get piss pounded best case you fight a slob and win. Stop and think what your doing isnt smart.

It takes years to become a good chain wrestler, years to become smooth and comfortable with mat play. Years to become a good solid boxer. Now think about mixing those things together and that is mma. Back out and learn the game.

all the MMArtists are wayyy under paid. u have to be top 10 or a good journeymen to make a living at it.

Train everyday and diet properly to help ur conditioning. Train at the top level schools around for a few years or else u will just ruin your name.

That's crazy, I know nothing about your event but i'm gonna say that the promoter of this fight is gonna have you fight one of his guys. This way you get smacked around and his guy looks like an MMA god. I've seen it too many times. You will not make a living at this I have several amatuer fights and i'm doing my first pro fight January 30th. Reguardless I have a few friends who are very well known names in the MMA community and they don't make enough to live comfortably on. There is no fighter union as of now and if you get seriously hurt, you are gonna have a hard time paying bills. I'd reconsider if I were you.

you're facing another guy who is 0-0-0 so he's gonna be just as confused as you. It's gonna be a confidence match, look comfortable and in control and it should throw him a bit and allow you to use your hands for damage. GL man

Good luck bro, it takes a lot of balls to get into a cage. There's different levels of MMA bouts, if he's fighting on an amateur level and classified at B or C class (meaning no ground & pound allowed and etc.) he should be ok.

Regardless of the outcome, it should an awesome experience for you - enjoy it & good luck!

why don't you read the fight card before coming down and talking about your skills. The MOST qualified fighter on the whole card has 2 fights, OP's opponent has 0. Half of the roster is filled with guys who have their myspace pictures as their fight picture and have 0 fights. they're all no names.

    good lord

This is a professional fight so their amatuer records won't show.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but pro wrestlers are tough as nails. Especially the indy guys who whack each other with chairs and tables for forty bucks a night.

Look at his links, this is an indy event. The promoter is simply wanting to sell tickets. The OP has a tough guy look that WILL sell tickets. LOVE the beard. ( Tank Abbott WISHES his beard was as cool). If he loses, no big deal, pro wrestlers know all about using ice. If he wins, he could go on and do main events for this guy. And develope his name. And crack a hundred bucks doing main events.

So it goes back to the original question: How do you make an honest living doing MMA? Easy, be the guy at the merch table. I see literally hundreds of guys every day, fat , lazy, regular guys all suited up in their Tapout shirts or whatever. Those tshirt vendors make way more than the guys fighting in the cage at that level.

This goes for martial arts, boxing, pro wrestling, or MMA: there is NO money in the small to mid level playing field. Do it because you love it. Not because you think there is money in it.

So you wanna do this fight? Go with my blessing. Have a good time. Win or lose, it's going to be a hell of a story. One piece of advise: if you get in a bind, hit him with that beard!!!!

I don't even know what to say. It's funny cus i trained for more than 5 years and I knew I hadn't trained enough to fight. But I trained with many guys who jump into it. I say train more , get your cardio up AND THEN try to fight....but if you go through with it...good luck and tap out when if you get caught before you break something.

P.S. I trained with 2 pro wrestlers (lucha libre), not enough to go pro IMO

I think it's a sport that honestly the right mind set and athletic ability at a amateur level can take you a long way.

Dealing with other amateurs, even ones on TUF level, a different set of rules apply. You are going to be fighting mostly guys who have a wrestling back ground, the fight is probably going to the ground, and chances are they are not going to know what to do after you are there.

I train with some local guys, but dont' fight as I don't have the time to be involved. But honestly, I think I'd fair better than most of them do in the King of the Cage fights.

At the amateur level, just being stronger, and more athletic trumps most people at that level.

When you get into the upper tier of the professinal level, your skill set obviously becomes much more important.

And it's not for everyone, the guy who really runs the program we train in, is in his mid 30's and has trained different forms of MMA since he was a child. He fights at the professional level and has a loosing record of 13-2-0. He's been into the 2nd round once.

If you roll with him on the mat sparing, he's going to take you down. He's probably going to secure a sub pretty quick from there.

Throw some strikes into the game, and his BJJ falls apart.

Everyone goes into a fight with a game plan, few can stick to that plan after getting punched in the face.

Yea, the pay is usually a $400 split.. Around here anyway (NY,NJ,CT). Anyone, can walk onto a pro card though. I know a few people that have done it but they trained and sparred for years before hand.

They might not, but I would assume they do before heading into battle.

testing is before the fight testing after the fight is rare

hes a amature fighter most still have tells for throwing kicks and punchs

for punchs watch his shoulder they move before his fist do

kicks are a lil harder watch for a small stance change in the rear foot and watch the hips

pace yourself if your not or are a puncher dont spend your whole load in one flurry

if your best at a ground game stick to a simple one two combo to many times amature wrestlers who are best at one thing try to add to many things to there game and just mess up

and being you have a wrestling background watch your lead leg cause you guys tend to leave it out there and we just love to try and break it cause once its gone u just lost 70% of your take down power

if u get takendown stay away from the cage cause if you get pinned up on it head first u wont be able to buck him off up over ur head 1 2 if your head is on the cage elbows and fist will rain down fast

learn two basic submissions from the top mount side mount and half gaurd master them

naw u can make ok money but u have to be willing to bet on yourself or on the other guy and throw a fight

and trust me when i say this i aint putting your skills down BUT

your going to lose this first fight no one has ever walked from off the street into a ring and won when kimbo slice tried out for ufc did u see how bad he looked and he lost bad

i have seen many guys come and go in this sport some get that first beating or just the training and they dont show up again
