    Need Help With Shin Splints??????

Does anybody have any advice about shin splints the pain has got that bad that i can no longer play football(soccer) or do cardio such as treadmill cross trainer and stair master.
So any advice would be great as my gp has basically said that there is no cure and that all i can do is rest (tried that for 6 weeks came back worse that before)

you can get them wrapped when you do your activity by a trainer and otherwise there is nothing you can do but rest to let them heal...ice it 3x a day for 20 minutes with an anti-inflammatory otherwise rest is your only other option, because they are hairline fractures in your bone and they need a little time to heal, usually you can work through it though. good luck

Lay off of them. They will heal on their own if you give it some time. If they are terrible and are diagnosed by a doctor as being a real problem, they will sometimes prescribe a medication that they give to cancer patients in order to help with bone strength.

Shin splints need time to heal. Until then, do all non-impact cardio to stay in shape. IMO, you best exercise for a while would be to get on a bike or lifecycle. No impact at all and good therapy.

Have you been x-rayed for possible stress fractures. I had some years ago. Time off was the only answer.
If you do not have them, then try this stretch. Kneel down while sitting all the way down as low as you can. Toes pointing back, you should get a nice gentle stretch on the shins. And of course ice is your best friend.

I agree with skank, have them looked at professionally. Stretching and ice will help alot. In my experience it is not your shin that is the problem. The pain actually starts in the ankle, as the ankle swells it released upwards into the shin. This is why the stretch skank talked about is a good idea. Have them looked at and it would be a good idea to see a Physical Therapist.

Wrap them when you work out with an ace bandage.

Another thing we used to have the marines do, is ly on a bed or chair...whatever works for you. Let you foot hang off and do sets of streches by drawing out the alphabet with your foot. Sounds strange, but you'll feel the stretch

We used to do this stretch/exercise as a warmup before running events. Great warmup and strengthening routine!

Sitting in a chair and tappining the balls of your feet lightly on the ground in sets works also.

I had shin splints bad before. Got them from playing basketball all day in slip-on vans with no socks. Couldn't do any cardio work for 4 months. I completely gave up on cardio and stepped up my diet to make sure I was maintaining proper caloric intake.
