    Is bodybuilding a sport? *Poll*

So what do you guys think? Is bodybuilding a sport?
Recently I had a conversation with a trainer at my gym who competes and he had a good point that bb'ing is nothing more than a beauty contest on stage. Although it's the toughest and most demanded contest out there.
I say its more of a lifestyle than sport.

    And, our bodybuilders athletes?
Good thread topic, bring it on!

Interested to see what Carlos, Nark, and P.B. recent competitors think

but you're neglecting the training/dieting behind it

IMO bodybuilders put in more effort than ANY other professional athletes

yes that is hard but i guess it ***ends on what you are calling body building. Is it just the day you are on stage? Or is it everything that goes into it?

The woman who do miss America and those kinds of competitions put a lot into training and dieting.

Doooo it i wanna read what you have to say.
I know for a fact the training and efforts necessary for getting onto the stage are a sport, but the actual contest (which determines the efforts put in) is that, a contest

    Dictionary (selected):

sport /spɔrt, spoʊrt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[spawrt, spohrt] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
    –noun
    1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
    2. a particular form of this, esp. in the out of doors.
    3. diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.

By this definition, Id say it is a sport.

It doesn't take an athlete to be a professional body builder, if you define an "athlete" as someone having some coordinated skill...i.e throwing a baseball or football without looking like a girl, being able to aim a bowling ball or dart. I think the common vein is eye-hand-coordination.

A new definition of "sport" is needed, and I propose:

Any physical activity involving a high level of eye/hand coordination and/or balance for the purpose of competition between two or more persons.

Under proper definition (the one I propose), neither bass fishing nor poker is a sport.

Youre making up your own defition which turns it into a personal opinion.

even though we used to make fun of them, we used to call the male skaters "tinker bells", most male figure skaters and a handful of female skaters could outskate any hockey player i ever skated with or against. when i was a pro, my powerskating instructor was a female figure skater. the practices they endure put hockey practices to shame. not very easy. cheerleading by itself i'm not sure. i dont know enough about it. i do know some male gymnasts who cheered and i can tell you that gymnastics is, no doubt, a sport. i've not met many people who can ace the inverted iron cross!

All definitions are, by definition (no pun intended), a personal opinion or, a consensus of personal opinions. In light of the recent rash of new quasi-sports and the expanded coverage of those sports by the media, I am simply proposing a more relevant definition to help the discussion along.

That having been said, yes, it is just my opinion.

BB is a hobby, not a sport.

If BBing is a sport, then so must be "Who has the biggest Penis." We can all sit around and compare penis's, tagged with #'s, while playing the stupid music.

    No, its not a sport.

Bodybuilding is a sport. Light weight training, talking in the gym, trying to eat well are hobbys. Intense training, dieting and having the disipline and mindset to continue it day in and day out and changing your body to compete on stage against the best in the world is most definitely a sport.

In a sport, you win by out "playing" the other team

IN the three things i mentioned, you win because a judge decides so.

in a sport, the ball is in your hands and you control your destiny.

In the three i mentioned, you have "NO" control over the outcome.

in a sport, you have control over the outcome

    respectfully, these are my opinions
