Anti-virus

Do I really need to renew my anti-virus (Norton) subscription or would running http://www.malwarebytes.org/ do the job and save me some money or is there something else I could do for protection?

I would start with doing a bit of homework regarding how effective some are - some are good but don't do updates that often where others are just the opposite. Some can thrash your system in cpu cycles and are bloated where some are streamlined and unobtuse. Here are a few places to get you started:

Take some of the above sights with a grain of salt, like everything else you stumble upon on the net. Never know who's palms get greased. If you want to go with free, there may be a few detriments, but better than nothing. Also, if you do decide to install another product or upgrade of the same, make sure to uninstall the old one first - allot of people don't do this and it turns out to be a pain in the ass. One other point, if your looking for deals, sometimes the below site has postings on antivirus packages (and everything else under the sun, like good quality protein powders). Just do a search in the top-right corner for 'anti' and look for the ones in hot deals. I saw one a few days ago that was a 3 pc install free after rebate. Good luck.

I have had a hate relationship with norty for years. There isn't many viruses out there anymore in this age since everything is going towards spyware/malware.

I tried the Norton 360 and thought it was an abomination. They couldn't pay me to install it again. The corporate version however was quick and dirty, the way I like it. Last year I had brought my system into a lan and someone had a virus that auto-spread to everyone else on the network - there were few left unscathed. I was one of them clean with the Norton Corporate installed, but it was going nuts blocking it.

Also, check the AV - Comparative test.org site and make a sound decision based on the information they provide.

Avast (not the top one) does a magnificent job; like some else wrote already, norton corporate edition, is good too.

If you are fed up with windows virus you can install linux ubuntu and add software like office 2007, nero, ares, adobe reader, fireworks and so on. Even you can install a Windows 7 theme.

I am putting in my vote for MS security essentials, as long as your copy of windows 7 is legit it is free, is not a resource hog and works very well security wise.

Security is a huge problem; it's very easy for malware or a rootkit to sneak in. I use malwarebytes along with ESET SmartSecurity (which includes the firewall; and is low on system resources) and Elite Anti Keylogger. They all work great together... you can't be too safe, that's for sure.

Its good that you have never had problems yet I tend to see more people with avg and have infected machines than ANY other antivirus in my shop. Im talking 8-10 a week on average

hmm? do you ever ask them what they were doing online the previous week or month?, there are lots of web sites that auto pop up a ms defender and people install the virus themselves. micrsoft explorer has lots of fake websites. make sure to let everyone to use Mozilla very little fake sites.

I paid 4 norton before and got a sh*t load of viruses!

The easy thing here is that all these do is add an additional "layer" of protection.

There is nothing out that 100% fool proof.

You can have a great alarm system on your car, but if you leave the windows down and doors unlocked it doesn't do you much good.

Run a scan with your antivirus everyday and watch out for the things you click on. If something looks suspicious stay away from it.

Or just buy a mac and laugh at the fact you don't need to deal with any of that silliness...

MS Security Essentials is the best freebie, otherwise Avira or GData are king. If you do by chance pick something up just combofix it or use hitman

Hey Marcus, malwarebytes is not anti-virus. Just download a free one like AVG, or Avast. The free install will take care of you. You just have to ignore irritating upgrade for the pay version type popups here and there. Definitely no real benefit to paying for service.

x2 I'm a computer science major and get free windows seven pro and still don't use it. I run Linux... download torrents, porn and never need any anti virus.

Not even close. There was a security article that I read a while back that had AVG at the top of the list for free ativirus and it had it catching somewhere in the mid 90%. If your computer is online it is being attacked constantly! Many times a day. Do the math, even if it's catching 97% witch it's not you are not so well off.

If your going to run windows online, 1 good paid for anti and at least 2 anti spyware. spybot is a good free anti spyware fyi.

Im an IT undergraduate, there are plenty of open-source antivirus software programs out there that can protect your computer very well.. Personally I use malwarebytes as well as avast.. I used Ad-aware from lavasoft for 7 years with no complaints.. Do they catch everything.. no but my systems never crash and as long as you do a scan to eliminate you will be fine.. It would be a good idea to add in a system registry cleaner as well, I use Glary utilites. The popular proprietary brands of antivirus software are really bloated and use alot of system resources..
