MCT Oil
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not everything you buy in a health-food store is good for you. Recent findings surprised even nutrition experts.
Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas found that an oil many people use to keep from raising their cholesterol actually has the opposite effect, a discovery that changed some commonly held beliefs about fats.
M-C-T oil is often sold in health-food stores as an alternative to other oils, like olive oil or canola oil. Because it is absorbed quickly into the liver, athletes use it to boost energy, believing it won't raise the level of LDL cholesterol -- the "bad" cholesterol -- in their bloodstream.
M-C-T stands for medium-chain triglyceride, a kind of fat doctors had long believed wouldn't raise cholesterol levels. But when UT Southwestern researchers tested M-C-T oil in the diets of study volunteers, they found it raised cholesterol levels, just like palm oil, which is known to be a cholesterol-raising fat.
If you're trying to keep your cholesterol low, stick with olive oil, canola oil and sunflower oil for cooking. Limit fats from your diet in general. Be wary of health claims made about foods you buy. Not only may the claims be exaggerated, but doctors may not yet fully understand how they affect the body. No one food is going to be a panacea that will dramatically improve your health. It's best to eat a sensible diet in moderation.
