I don't know about slowing metabolism but I am however a firm believer in one thing. If you eat more than maintenance calories you gain weight. Without your stats it is hard to suggest what you would require. I find this link rather interesting or the author more so. Work through it then decide if you are eating past what your maintenance calories would be.
