    Fact or Fiction?

Alright, so one of my buddies told me this and I'm a little iffy about it, so here it goes: He says that drinking cold water can help one lose weight. He claimed that your body is forced to 'warm' the water up, which causes calories to be burned as your body is working to heat the water up to a suitable temp. So basically drinking cold water = burning cals.

So what do you guys think: fact or fiction?

I have also read this. I believe i read it in one of gene rylacks reports. He says your body must use energy to warm the water.

I am also interested in this. though i am sure it is not a tremendous amount of weight. Maybe an extra pound every few months.

The body expends somewhere between 50-100 calories per gallon of ice cold water you drink as this water is being warmed. I would consider this negligible.

Anyway...water washes out harmful toxins and helps prime the body for fat loss. If the body is not taking in enough water, it will retain all the water that it has, leaving you feeling bloated. You must drink water to rid this excess water. If you have not been taking in enough water, as you begin to do so, the body may initially drop a couple pounds as it adjusts. Drinking water allows the body to function optimally and can help help raise your metabolism equating in weight loss.

Yeah - obviously the body has to produce heat to warm the water so it can be utilized (it can't be absorbed if it is too cold - I think he needs to reach the same temp as the body)... and this heat-generation would come from burning some macros but its probably pretty negligible... I can't remember the actual numbers.

I think if this is a staple for weight loss for someone - the same person probably won't nut all week becuase he doesn't want his testosterone levels to drop...

Also - there are times when warm water would be a better option, as opposed to the tease of cold water when your system is already dehydrated... like during exercise.

that seems about right. as far as it being negligible, i think that all depends on the person. when cutting up, every little bit counts.

Yeah - 100 calories seems a little high... where did you get that info PhishStasH? Interesting if it is true...

Pretty sure I read it on an article from bodybuildingforyou.com.

I was thinking the same thing as well about 100 cal/day but I'm certain that's what the article read. I was thinking more in the range of 50 cal/day.

if i remember right, those were about the same numbers i had heard of in a training seminar one time. i don't pay much attention at most the seminars, as most are just for ceu credits, but i remember one time we started discussing the temp of foods/beverages and how it affects your metabolism.

don't forget to take into account though that digesting anything, even water, burns calories anyway. those numbers will also greatly vary depending on the individual and external temps.

personally, i like my water nice and cold, and am not about to start drinking warm water cause it might help me bulk up faster. i'm good on that thanks, especially here in florida. without the cold water, i might melt in the heat.
