i have always thought the you shouldnt drink alot of water with meals because it will make it harder to digest. now some people think you should drink alot of water with meals, and i was wondering which way is the best and why?
opinions would be great, scientific articles would be even better

"It is not preferable to drink water before right eating, because water dilutes the digestion enzymes, when stomach is in a dire need for this digestive acid after a meal. Water also reduces the appetite. However, you can drink water half an hour before having food. In addition, drinking water while eating will alleviate the concentration of the digestion enzymes, causing indigestion and enlarging the size of stomach."
just found this statement at digestive-enzymes.net, any other opinions or does anyone disagree?

digestion has three phases.
1. cephalic- when you see or smell food (or even think about it) your stomach is already pumping out HCl
2. gastric- when there is any food present in the stomach it secretes Ach, gastrin, and other histamines until the ph is around 2, at which poiint negative feedback will stop the secretions.
3. intestinal- which has nothing to do with enzymes you are talking about but , it is when the duodenum is full and it will tell the stomach to decrease motility and stop filling the intestines for a short time.
i teach this in at the university. water only adds to the mix and provides natural appetite suppression and a longer feeling of fullness.

im not talking about having an 8oz glass of water with your meal, im talking about alot of water, say a quart with each meal. it seems to me that this much water would dilute whatever your stomach produces to breakdown the food. which would make your stomach have to produce more acids and slow down the digestion.
i appreciate your feedback nova, you are much more educated in this area than me.

You're right, you should drink water 1/2 hour before you eat. I drink nothing while I'm eating, only after. It's not entirely bad but would be better to practice it....eating and drinking does mess up digestion a little bit, to your stomach it's kinda like having soup every meal every day

I try not to drink while eating. I used to have get really bad diarhea everyday as well as acid reflux and bloating for most my life. Finally figuered out if i dont drink while eating it doesnt happen. So for me drinking while eating is not an option anymore.

Interesting, I always drink while eating, and often times it's quite a bit (20-30oz), I haven't had an issue with it. I am cutting however and I could see it possibly making it tough to down enough food while bulking. I'm not really sure on the digestion though possibly something to look into.

i don't think i could eat without drinking water. eating always makes me thirsty, and nothing like washing your food down with water. i take in ridiculous amounts of water, so i'm always drinking it throughout the day.
though i can't help with any scientific studies indicating which is better, i do know that if you're thirsty while eating, by all means drink up. not drinking while the thirst mechanism is kicking in can increase cortisol levels, and we all know what that can do to you.

There is no studies clearly states that water hinders diegestion when taken with meals. It's important to drink enough water but not necessarily at meal time. The stomach needs water to digest foods this is without doubt, but it draws in what it needs from the rest of the body, temporarily. Also, everything you eat contains water, even meats. Fruits and vegetables are upto 90% water. Drinking liquids with meals is a matter of preference, if you prefer it do it, we all need water.

I drink when I am thirsty, meals or not.
I don't need scientific studies for that, nor would I spend time looking for such a thing.

i agree swole. some people look way too into things. if you're thirsty, you need to drink up, regardless of when. simple as that.

I always drink water with meals. Ever see the asian kid that holds the record for eating, he weighs 130lbs and eats 30 hot dogs in a sitting. He also drinks water so maybe its a good idea, especially if you've gotta crap out 30 hot dogs! lol

So I'm reading this as I'm eating a chicken breast and peanut butter. No way to not drink water without choking to death.

I usually drink before, then after each meal, because if I start drinking while eating, I get bloated quickly, and have a hard time finishing my meal.

There was a thread on this that I read long ago...
the search function may help the original poster find the thread, it was good info.
I however drink A LOT of water with every meal. It is simply a necessity, as I use it to wash down my bland, dry food (seeing as I can't cook worth a damn).
