5'11 133, would like to gain 20-25lbs. any advise from people who have been there?
Want to start off by saying I’m new here. I have been a skinny guy my whole life. I’ve been working out and exercising for about 2.5 years now and really want to gain a little mass. I’m 23yrs old, 5’11 and 133lbs. Obviously what I am doing isn’t working because I see little change, yea there is more tone to me but I haven’t been able to get much more bulk. I’m not looking to get really huge but for my height I’d like to be in the 160lb area. I’m taking N-Large2. I also take methyl ripped which seems to give me a little more energy when I run so I like that but have only been taking it for 2 weeks. I’m a bartender and I drink pretty moderately (about 3 nights a week) however when I drink its pretty much only vodka martini’s so there no mixers involved that add sugar. I know alcohol probably effects my gains (or lack thereof) but don’t know exactly how much that is a factor. I eat 2-3 meals a day in addition to the weight gainer but am seeing little in gains. On average I’d estimate that I take in about 2,500 calories per day. Any advice to enlighten me on how to get some decent gains would be greatly appreciated.

you need more food in my opinion. check out the bulking sticky. the nlarge will probably help, but you shouldn't rely on it. i can't say the alcohol won't hurt you, but if your goal is just to put on 20 lbs. regardless of what kind of weight it is, I don't see it being too impairing. my advice would be lose it, but some people find that unrealistic. 2-3 meals a day isn't enough. start eatin boy!

Hey there PBure96, welcome
I have a cousin with almost exactly the same stats as yours...and he EATS like a horse, mind you! His doctor tells he has hyper- metabolism which should decrease as he ages..he has also tried tonz of weight-gainer products to no avail...and if he eats more than he already does, he'll end up throwing up.....tricky situation, it is!! He's asked for my advice many many times and each time I can see the desperation in his voice...but he never takes it seriously enough to commit so I let him know that as long as he doesn't dedicate, to forget approaching me..however, I hear your pain bro!
first, i reccommend reading the sticky on nutrition for hard gainers...then try it out (be committed, even if you have to force feed yourself until you get used to it)and ask the bros on the board any questions from there should you find it not working...
cheers..Last edited by InsaneInTheMembrane; 07-12-2006 at 01:15 AM.

Haha yea i know i need to eat more but the way my shifts are its kinda difficult. But i definatly have a reguard for the type of weight i want to gain, I have a flat stomach but ideally id like to see some good defination in my abs. I've heard eating before bed isnt good interms of the type of weight that you will gain but when i get out at 3am im starving so i tend to eat and go pass out. I need to change my eating habits though i definatly know that just dont know where to start.

Hey, insane in the membrane. My friend had a similar problem to your friend. He had hyper metabolism ate close to 4k a day but still remained 140 5'10. To try it i told him he should maybe try the product russian bear 5000. Its something like 5000 k's when mixed with a gallon of milk. He just sips on it from morning to night along with his 6 meals a day and has seen excellent results gaining 15 pounds in 4 months, 70 percent muscle Id say.

The drink is a big problem. And the infrequent meals can be a real problem too.
I never used to gain weight much, i had a super fast metabolism.
To gain weight i ate alot! And i got really Fat too!
Simple tips i can give you if you want to improve you're physique would be.
1) Cut the drinking down. Cut it out if you can but if not just cut it down.
2) eat more, like 3500kcals a day min. Try for 4-5 REAL food meals. Eat the MRP's as additional meals not as the main base fo you're meals.
3) train consistently.

Drinking alcohol, especially 3 nights a week or more, has no place in any remotely serious fitness approach.

3 nights a week isnt moderate. if you asked a normal adult they would call you an alcoholic or binge drinker. drink like once every other week.

First off alcohol has a ton of sugar in it and in turn offers you nothing but hindered gains.
Second off, get serious about your diet and workout routine or just decide right now that this shit ain't for you.
If you're serious, here's my best advice.
Eat more. Get yourself on a timed schedule to eat every 2 hours. Use your cellphone like I do to set 2 hour reminders so that you never miss a meal.
Eat 8- 9 meals a day. Eat real food and only use Whey protein shakes right after you workout and/or when you are in a hurry and just don't have time to cook. No more than 2-3 shakes a day with 50g whey protein in them.
Eat smaller portion meals instead of trying to stuff yourself to the gills.
Throw away your weight gainer and those "Get Ripped Quick" waste of money pills.
Take a good daily vitamin instead.
Get a good workout routine.
I suggest that you workout your core muscles something like this.
Mon. Chest/Shoulders and Triceps
Tue. Cardio
Wed. Legs/Deadlifts
Thur. Cardio
Fri. Back/Biceps and forearms.
Sat. off
Sun. off
Lift heavy weights. Set the weight so that you can only lift the weight 6-8 times (reps). Do 6 sets and 6-8 reps for every muscle group. Lift your little heart out. Don't ****ing cheat.
Get 8 hours of good rest every night. Stay focused and motivated and remember that you don't grow in the gym. You grow when your diet is in check. It's 1% working out, 80% diet and 19% YOU!

Drinking that much will kill your goals. You really should be drinking whey protein drinks instead.
I (170lbs) have gained 10lbs natty (exception: creatine) in the past two months by eating 6-7 meals evenly throughout the day with a 3000-3500 kcal intake ed. I have also maintained a 31" waist.
What I do for starters:
1) 1.5 grams/ protien per pound of body weight. ie: If you weigh 100lbs you need 150 grams of protien ED.
2) CLEAN FOODS! Chicken, oatmeal, fish, etc...
3) 3 tbs flax seed oil ED.
4) Workout EOD with heavy weights @ 50-80 reps max. for a single muscle group (chest).
5) EAT immediatly (15-45 minutes) after every wourkout.
6) Sups (creatine, multi-vitamines)
6) F*%k the cardio for a few months.
Its working for me.

Light cardio during bulking does not hurt muscle gains.

Thanks
Yeah I def. need to cut down the drinking. Out isnt really a possibility because people tend to get mad when you continuously refuse drinks when customers want to buy (yeah i prefer it in the tip, wish it was that easy) Cutting down to once a week and having one or two shouldnt be a problem at all. I've started eating more and when the weight gainer is done I dont plan on buying any more. Just going to see where a shitload of grilled chicken and tuna will get me. Been looking at some of the meals people eat on here and I'm gonna take a stab at it. Thanks to everyone and specifically Lavinco, the cell phone thing is a good idea. Would'nt have thought of that.

Nah, no "want" or "need" really. I'm gonna cut way back on it and see how that goes. From the looks of it I should feel/notice a difference and I'm getting really tired of staying skinny. I'm not looking to put on a huge amount of weight just something to fill me out a little, in a good way, dont care to put on fat. Besides standard curls are there any other good bicep workouts to switch it up a little. So far on my bicep days I'll put the bench on an incline and curl 2 DB, and then standard bar curl and then I'll do pull-ups.

I only do 3 sets of barbell curls and 3 sets of dumbell curls for biceps (6 sets total). If you do your biceps on back day AFTER you workout your back, then your biceps will benefit the most.Last edited by Lavinco; 07-14-2006 at 07:32 AM.
