Whats the deal with deal with SODIUM???????

So I have done some research and have rudimentary knowledge of sodium and its water retaining effects but really, I don't have any idea how it can be detrimental to body building unless you are cutting.

Can you eat too much of it? Can it diminish gains?

    Thanks

Sodium is of no issue to me personally until the last week before a show/shoot/event. As long as you drink adequate water, your body will flush out the excess.

tooo much sodium is hard on the kidneys, plus it can lead to water retention.

High sodium intake is linked to High Blood Pressure.

Again, if you drink enough water, you should have no issues.

    To each his own......

I agree with you to a point Swole. If someone eat a lot of processed food, you are looking at about 1-2% salt in these. That adds up very quickly.

Ok so, I buy a lot of Lean cuisine because I can microwave a dinner that has potatos, peas and turkey but the only kicker is that it has like 50% of my daily value? Does this mean that lean cuisine's are bad?

I wouldn't eat that processed shit for reasons other than sodium. For one it's processed, and secondly you are at the mercy of whatever macros the meal contains which NEVER meets what I need.

Certainly and that is your perogative. I do my best to avoid them too. The question specificallt=y asked about sodium without any mention of macro. I just though the point about processed food deserved mention because it migh not be obvious to everyone.

ditto. Never an issue with adequate water intake.

Not unless if it is the last weeks of prep.

I'll offer whatever additional reasons I see fit for educational purposes, as I am not bound to address only the question posed.

I have no boss, thank you.

a very simple way to cut down on sodium(not that I think its needed to cut down on sodium) is to replace your table salt with a 50/50 mix of sodium and potassium chloride.

Taste exactly the same and gives potassium. Something we usualy dont get enough of.

For my 3rd meal of the day (I think some people call it lunch or something like that) I'm always eating canned tuna, chicken or turkey because I always have to pack it to school. All together, I'm getting about 2000mg of sodium a day (I think a lot of that comes from mustard and other shit that I use to try to add flavor to my boring ass meals) I always drink over a gallon of water a day (16 oz with each meal, 32 oz during workout). Swole, do you think that's too much sodium a day?

Well, I'm on a cut cycle. I'm 213 and about 14% bf. I'm consuming about 2200 calories a day. I'm doing 30 min HIIT cardio 5x/week and lifting 4x/week. Swole, you got anything for me on this one?

My understanding is 2-4 grams a day is ideal.

In Chris Aceto's article "10 quick tips to build mass" tip # 3 says-
    3. Increase Sodium Intake

I'm not kidding. Sodium is an essential mineral that is an absolute must for muscle growth. Sodium has a bad rap because it can cause water retention - anathema to contest ready bodybuilders. On the plus side, sodium enhances carbohydrate storage and amino acid absorption while also improving the muscle's responsiveness to insulin .
There you have it sodium IS good. heres the site:
