    Milk: Good or bad?

Im on a bulking cycle, and have a good ab workout. I can feel the muscle developing, yet I still have a little bulge and no real definition on my abs.

I usually consume around 5 cups of 2% everyday (give or take a little)...

    Could this be my problem?

I wouldn't expect to see my abs during bulking. Save those worries for your cutting cycle and concentrate on eating. You wont look defined till you cut. Milks fine for bulking as part of a well planned diet.

    yeah, ditto

when bulking, you usually dont worry about showing those "rock hard abs"

Thats all when cutting, and when cutting, milk is a big no no IMO.

But with bulking, have at it!

With bulking, it's ok in moderation. When cutting, that's a definate no in my book.

5 cups ed does sound excessive to me. I'll ocassionally have a glass of skim with some casein if I'm up in the middle of the night, but that's it.

Yeah, when bulking...I had milk only with my shakes...which was 1-2, depending on the day.

well, is the main concern for milk the sugar and lactose when cutting?

if so, then can't you use lactaid in pwo? like 1/2 or 1 cup?

lactaid just includes the enzyme needed to digest the lactose

lactose is a slow digesting sugar. plus it has fat in it so that gi stuff doesnt really matter becasue the fat slows down the digestion anyway

I use skim with no probs. Usually only have some with my oats in the morning and then pwo or ppwo so sugar isn't an issue for me. Milk also contains IGF-1!!

it may be low gi and slow digesting, but that's only part of the picture

the real deal is how much of an insulin response the sugar causes, which is not 100% accurately accounted for by the GI index.

in this regard, milk's insulin response is actually much higher than one would assume from its GI

Gaining alittle fat to gain a bunch of muscle doesnt bother me. drinking milk makes getting to my calorie needs easier and cheaper. It has been working so far with minimal fat gain so why not do what works.

A little bit of milk is beneficial. But you have to remember, moderation is key. I still won't mess with it when cutting though. It gives me a soft appearance too. Something I'm not too fond of when cutting.

I used to make all my protein shakes with milk untill I found that I like water instead. After my workout i would go home and slam a protein shake made with milk. It made me feel so shitty using milk in my pwo shake. I now just stick to water, unless i have a shake right before bed.
