So say if I hit 230 and most pretty solid muscle and have to take in 4000 cals to maintain weight (just an example)
but I dont...I take in about 3000, eating a nice good healthy diet.
and train hard too.
Will I still slowly lose muscle?

There are many factors IMO. Gear and also the ratio of protein in those 3000cals. I the above 2 are in place u might hold on to muscle while losing fat. Also I find it very easy to maintain, but hard to gain. Also any mass u lose u will gain back very quickly if cals are bumped do to muscle memory and possible supercompensation of nutrients(under/overfeeding). Hope that helps.
