    carbs or fats?

I'm trying to cut out some BF and I am wondering which is worse for you, Carbs or fats. Dr. Atkins says that the carbs are what create the cells and then the fat fills those cells. Therefor if you cut the carbs, the fat has nowhere to go. What's the deal????

bad fats will make you fat. i.e. trans fat/saturated fat. With the good EFA's its hard to gain "fat"

Low carb weight loss is mainly water in the short term
The body stores excess glucose as glycogen and converts glycogen back into glucose to use as fuel if there is not enough carbohydrate in the diet. Around 3g of water is needed to release one gram of glycogen, so the rapid initial weight loss on a low carbohydrate diet is mostly water, not body fat.

When a normal diet is resumed, some muscle tissue is rebuilt, water is restored and weight quickly returns, mostly as fat. This can contribute to the problem effect of dieting called the ‘yoyo’ effect

If this helps at all for whatever answer you want.

Yes, I have read about the rebound effect. I can see how it can happen. I'm just wondering if I need to back off the carbs more, or back off the fats. I know it is hard to tell without posting my diet but I don't really keep track. I really just watch what I eat, stay away from the really bad foods. I do drink quite a bit but have cut back to just low carb beer if I need to drink.

My training level is very experienced, I just never had to worry about diet. I have fairly good genetics but as I get older (33) the fatv has started to show in my stomach. In no way am I fat, I just need to shed some body fat to bring out definition. I do 20-30 min of cardio (walking on treadmill with THR 135 bpm) directly after my workout.

IMO I would cut back on both fats and carbs.

And still keep the fats good, and carbs complex

Trying to shed fat, which is cutting, carbs are cut down, but still good enough for energy and overall body well being.

Also, you can up your cardio days...im not sure what yr doing, but try 7 days a week, 1 hour 70% MHR(max heart rate)

You are wrong. Bad fats wil not make you fat. Mixing fat with carbs will make you fat. You need all fat in your diet, saturated, mono and poly. I have experimented now for 3 years and here are my findings.

You need just enough carbs for repair and energy a day. I have found for me that is 50-100 grams ( right after and or vefore a workout)

I have been on diets ranging from 30 grams of fat a day all the way up to my current diet which has me eating 350 grams a day.

Fat is fat. I do not care what anyone says. I have found that about 2-3 servings a day of Poly (saflower, flax), 4-6 servings a day of mono (olive oil, peanuts, natty p. butter), and about the rest of the diet should come from saturated fat (butter, animal fat, coconut oil, etc.) about 100-150 grams of saturated.

I have done this diet straight for 3 months before (350 grams of fat), got a physical and was in shape like a 16 yr. old track star, go figure, the bad fats were killing me. LOL!

I smile when I see someone say that "bad fat will make you fat". Saturated fat, good fat, carbs and protein are all great for you body, it just matters when and how much you eat.

According to Dr. Atkins, hot dogs are allowed. I'll pass on that. A balanced diet will consist of both carbs and fats and both are used to help reach differrent goals and alot of it depends on the person.

    350g of fat/day? Good diet?

That's a little over 3000calories from fat alone..
    I'll pass.

I agree that bad will not make you fat and you do need a certain amount of saturated fat everyday. However, you don't need any trans fat in your diet ever. Most people believe that saturated fats will make you fatter than poly unsaturateds or moly unsaturateds, but the truth is they both have the same caloric breakdown. Neither will make you fat directly, but the saturated and trans fats are horrible for your cardiac health. Fat will only make you fat when large amounts are taken in at one time making harder for your body to burn all those calories so some get stored. When you go to most fast food restaurants and you have a whopper you take in roughly 54 grams of fat that your body won't be able to break down. So a large amount of fat is than available for storage (not to mention all the other calories from soda, fries, and everything else). On the othe hand, taking the correct amount of poly unsaturated and moly unsaturated fats during a cutting a diet is essential in loosing body fat. I think the most important thing to do is to try and stay with high protein, low carbs and moderate fats (mostly poly and moly unsaturateds). A breakdown of 50/20/30 respectively should do the trick. You also want to avoid complex carbs and try to avoid eating carbs and fats in the same meal.

PS. 350 grams of fat! Damn that's an impressive number, but I wouldn't be able to pull that off.

One thing an one thing only makes you fat....

Eating more than you expend. Not mixing fats and carbs. You could mix fats and carbs all day long but if you are hypocaloric you WILL NOT gain weight, period.

Totally agree with you on this one. People are too fixed on finding a magic bullet, whether it's carbs, fats or protein I don't care. Bottom line CALORIES IN VS. CALORIES OUT.
