A question for those that have kids

There are many parents that let their kids eat unhealthy food and cakes and candy etc. You guys that healthy do you let your kid/kids only eat healthy food and never anything that is unhealthy? Do you let them eat something unhealthy like on friday and/or saturday evening and healthy the rest of the week?

I think you need to decipher between healthy and non-healthy...

Example... when i have kids let say there are 7-10 years of agfe (inshallah) would i make them eat chicken breast and yams for lunch, not dinner maybe.. I wouldnt put them on the foods I "eat"

I would gear there meal plans around "the normal people" healthy.. Like a granola bar, flavored yogurts, pudding,, cheese and crackers healthy snacks etc... after all there are kids... Thats how i was brought up we would get healthy foods but "Normal People Healthy/ General People Healthy"

My cousin's mom never ever let him eat ice cream. That seemed to be the ONLY thing she wouldn't let him eat. He's a thin guy but that is the only thing he wants to eat now. I think just finding that balance is key.

With healthy I mean healthy carbs, fats and proteins. Not fastfood with high sugar and high unhealthy fats or that they eat cakes and cookies everyday.
I don´t have any kids but I´m just wondering if the guys here that have kids let their kids eat healthy. If they try to get their kids to eat fruits and greens and don´t let them eat food high in sugar.

I am not a parent, but growing up my parents never really took me to McDonalds, or bought to much junk food around the house. I had home made baby food. Supplying healthy food at home would be a good idea, seeing that you know what they will be eating at school and at friends houses. I also find it interesting that baby food is loaded with sugar, guess they try and get you hooked at a young age.

I have friends who have never eaten fast food or other junk, their parents always cooked and had them eat balanced meals. This included pasta, bread, and other things bodybuiders stay away from. Never much junk around the house and they ended up maintaining a healthy weight all their lives. I think balance is key, but also do not focus so much attention on food and the kids will eventually make their own choice.

here is the key, just make sure the snacks and foods in your house are healthy ones, they'll get accustomed to those foods, and if they don't like them tough shit, you pay the grocery bill, not them, and someday they'll thank you for it. They'll have a chance to eat enough junk between school and friends houses

I let my daughter eat cookies and ice cream occasionally. Absolutely no soda or even juice for that matter (she doesn't really like juice plus it has tons of sugar). She loves veggies and fruits and fish. Her dad and I eat healthy, but we don't completely restrict ourselves, so we don't do that to her either. Plus, you have to bribe kids sometimes to behave in the grocery store

I give my son cookies if he uses the potty instead of craping in his pull up. Hows that for bribing!

    I let my 5 m.o. son breastfeed...is that okay?

We don't have the same amount of junk food offerings in Japan as in the States. Anyhow we rarely let our 2 y.o. daughter eat sweets or processed foods. If she wants something sweet, she gets an apple or other piece of fruit. I refuse to take my kids to McDonald's - not after seeing SuperSize Me. Personally, I grew up not knowing what boxed cereal tasted like until I went off to college.

I'm absolutely anal about how I eat...very strict all year long whether I'm getting ready for a show or in off-season. But when it coes to my kids (5 year old daughter and a 3 year old son) I'll let tham be kids. Yes I make sure they eat a well balanced diet (hey, nutrition is my specialty) but they get dessert when they eat all their supper and a couple of times a month we hit up McDonalds. I would never say restrict their eating patterns to much....let 'em be kids, just make sure they're getting a well balanced diet.

I have two kids and in the last two years have lost 143 lbs. I try and keep my kids away from sugars and candy altogether. Special occasions like birthday or parties are different. I usually try and keep fruit or low sugar snacks on hand in case they are asking about candy or snacks, as my wife has that stuff in the house. You can usually find a good alternative to "the bad stuff", just be creative and make it fun to eat good.

I have two kids and have lost 143lbs in the last 2 years, so i eat pretty healthy now. I usually dont let my kids have cakes, candies and things with alot of sugar. Special occasions are different, but even then i try and set a limit on it. I make eating good food fun. You can do alot with fruits and snacks that are low sugar. I believe that what the parents eat reflects alot on what the kids eat. I am currently trying to get this point across to my wife, with little success.

like most have stated i think balance is the key. i make sure my kids eat healthy to a certain degree without being crazy after all they are kids. I have a two year old that only wants to eat waffles and oatmeal every meal.

You cannot be too anal about junk food, otherwise they will be closet addicts..

It is important to make sure they know what eating healthy is about and why... Of course your not saying what not to eat as you shovel it in your mouth...

Staying active as a family is the other key... Get your kids loving sports and other exercise ... they will follow suit as they get older by watching what they eat when mommy and daddy arent around...

    good luck

Yep that's the biggie and agree BALANCE...what really sucks is the junk food is cheaper...i wish produce and lean meats went on sale like Oreos and Doritos
I have 4 daughters and have been lucky enough to keep their diet fairly good...it's hard when daddy's not around and mom gives in easier

We make sure the meals he is provided with at home are healthy and balanced but suitable for a "normal" diet. Stuff like spaghetti bolognaise or pork chop, tatoes and veg, chicken drumsticks and veg with gravy. Once a week (on shopping day) we buy him a naughty meal (like pizza+chips) and a desert of his choice. He also gets pocket money if he is well behaved at school/home and is free to spend it on whatever he likes. We only buy him one bottle of 1.5 litre fizzy drink a week as i think drinks are V bad packed with sugar and flavourings and kids drink them like water.

I dont have any kids, but i can think back to my childhood. Mom would always cook for us decent foods with the occasional mac and cheese, hot dogs that sort of thing. But i think what killed us is the fact we did nothing pretty much, hardly any playing outside, sat around and played video games, watched TV that sort of thing. Personally i think makeing your kids go outside to ride bike and play with the other kids and really limit there tv and video game time is very important. Just keep them really active and a decent diet and they should be fine i would think.

With our two sons, we try to give them well balanced diet. The only thing that we restrict is sodas. They drink more water than anything. Juice, we give it to them. We buy only juice that is 100% juice. Yes, there are still naturally occuring simple sugars in there, but that's fine as they are getting their vitamins from there. Both of them, 3 1/2 and 5 take multivitamin everyday.

With kids, you can't restrict too much. As long as the diet is well rounded, veggies, carbs, protein, fats. Small, growing kids need more fats than adults as well.

For rice, in our house, we only do brown rice now and kids eat that as well. Everything is whole wheat, pastas, breads, tortillas, etc.

My 5 years old son likes chocolote and he gets a treat almost everyday. Is he overweight - no. Actually, with him, we would add and still do, carnation breakfast to his evening milk as he was on the lower side weight-wise for his age group. Since then, he's on the upper side length and weight wise. They will get an occasional MacDonald's as well.

my kids eat good balanced meals they eat and love all fruit & veg , and they get good cooked meals all the time and a good variety of different food some parents just feed there kids sh*t with chips for every meal .My kids have sweets and ice cream all the stuff what being a kid is about just not to much and not everyday.I hate these parents who just feed there kids fast food and the kid just turns there noses up at any fruit or veg likes its bad for them.
