Dextrose is very sweet, maltodextrin hardly sweet. I usually mix the two so the shake is not too sweet. I use about 65% malto to 35% dextrose. Here is a readup on the two.

Dextrose is pretty much the same thing as corn starch which you can pickup at your local grocery store. Most wine/beer making shops sell dextrose and maltodextrin much cheaper than health food stores.

Dude just get powdered gatorade concentrate from walmart. Its a great blend of sucrose and dextrose, plus you get great taste (Choc. Pro and orange gatorade!) and the addition of some electolytes

How are you planning to use malto/dex? Most will only use it in PWO, some will also include it prior to the workout but in a smaller dosage. It all depends on your goals.

You're mentioning rice cakes or bagels. I don't think you understand the purpose of using malto/dex. Use it any other time and you will be gaining fat. These are simple carbs...

I'm assuming you want to gain weight. Read a bit about nutrition - you still have to eat clean or you will just get fat. But, just to give you an idea, all the other carbs should be complex (yams/sweet potatoes, brown rice, whole wheat pastas, oats, whole wheat bread). Every meal should have protein+fat+fibrous carb(veggies) or protein+carb and you can as well include fibrous carbs. When you're injesting protein+carbs you don't include any fats other than naturally occuring in the produce.

When the meal has fat, it should include naturally occuring fat and the addition of essential fats (olive oil, fish oil and/or flax oil or ground up flax seed).

It's more to it than that. To stay lean, it's all about nutrition and exercise, both weights and cardio. What you do post workout does not matter. You have to track your calories and know your caloric requirements.

The whole point of using simple carbs post workout is to feed the muscle as soon as possible - some call it window of opportunity. People will usually have another meal after that - complex carbs and protein as it is beneficial as well. During post workout it's about the only time, aside from the first thing in the morning when carbs are really beneficial to you and rarely will go to fat. Also, a lot of people will have a complex carb+protein meal 1 hours or so before your workout to give you energy and get you through the workout.

A very good substitute for dextrose would be sweet-tarts. About two rolls will get you your 90g of maltodextrose because that is basically all they are. It is kinda hard to get through that many without your tongue being raw, but it is a substitute for powdered dextrose.
