    Preworkout Carbs

    July, 2006 by Chris Aceto

What are the best carbohydrates to eat before training?

Carbohydrate consumption 40-60 minutes before training can affect how intensely you train. Carbs buffer the burning of muscle glycogen (the collection of carbs stored in muscles). Glycogen is the main source of training fuel, and consuming a moderate amount of carbs preworkout prevents its rapid depletion. When glycogen levels fall, training intensity generally stalls. That said, ideal carbs to eat before a workout include low-glycemic (slow-digesting) sources like oatmeal, cream of rye cereal, red potatoes and whole-grain bread because they tend to linger in the blood-stream, which slows the body's ability to rapidly burn through its glycogen reserves. The result: Glycogen levels remain elevated, letting you train harder and longer.

very good to know... I always thought that you need to work out (for me=cardio) on a completely empty stomach. Like---hours after you have eaten anything... When i do this i have no energy and get all light headed.

if you're trying to burn bodyfat cardio on an empty stomach is still the best way to go because your glycogen is depleted so you will start burning fat much sooner. glycogen is your bodys primary source of fuel so if you are doing cardio your body will burn off the glycogen before it starts using your excess fat as fuel.

Cardio should be done on an empty stomach for fat loss. Only if you are going for endurance training should you eat before cardio. This pre-workout eating is in reference to strength training.

edit: beat me to it, dangit

I truly doubt I will EVER EVER do am cardio again. I did it for a year, got shredded with a good diet (KEY) and lost too much mass.....my opinion, 20-30 minutes pw or 40-45 on off days 3 hours after your last meal of p/f works just as well if not better!

I agree with you Zodiac, but dont you think in rubix case if she is feeling light headed a small amount of oats or wheat toast with BCAA's or a scoop of pro about 30min before would be ok.

your going to burn glycogen no matter what but if the intensity (170-age) is there you'll still burn a large % of BF. Especially if she feels like passing out.

Columbus heres a thread by Giantz where you can see that am cardio is not catabolic, i usually stay in my burning fat zone 65 to 75% HR and run 30 min to 45min

AM cardio is great, PM cardio is great.. just depends on too many other things that make the difference as well.
I can get pretty shredded without a lick of cardio but the intensity of my workouts takes place of any calories that would be burned during a cardio session.

Just gotta play with it and see what works for you before you rule anything out.

I think you can do am or pm cardio without loosing size.. you lost so much size b/c you werent enough eating over training etc.

AGREED......../but I just can't fathom that doing cardio after an 8 hour fast when ou body and muscles and craving nuitrients doesnt burn muscle as soon as the glycogen stores are depleted.....
