Exclamation Is tuna bad for you?

I read a lot of peoples diets which usually contain a can of tuna as one of their meals for the day b/c of how easy it is to make and high protien/low fat but ive read that eating canned tuna too often can be bad for brain function and other stuff because of the mercury in it, soo whats the deal? should i care or not? cuz i dont want tuna to make me dumb!

I don't eat much tuna due to the mercury issue. It is a shame as it is an excellent and cheap protein source. Luckily i am in a finacial position not to worry to much about cheap, so i stick with safer (but more expensive) options.

I don't see a problem with tuna consumption and the mercury issue shouldn't be a factor unless you're eating ridiculous amounts of it. Albacore apparently contains far more mercury than canned tuna in water though. Eat up!

They have the canned chicken which is similar, but without the mercury hazards.

I have tuna once or twice a week but wouldnt eat more than that. I eat the chunk light in water because as JC said albacore is much higher in mercury.

I have anywhere from 2-4 cans a day and have had no issues, if that means anything.

Personally I don't eat as much anymore. I limit myself to 2 or 3 cans a week. As PB said it is a shame because it's cheap. Check out this Consumer Reports article on tuna.

Theirs always a rumour about food thats bad. I've seen worrying information about a lot of different foods. Pretty much i just ignore them and eat up.

last year...when i started my bulking process I was consuming 3 cans of white albacore a day because i had a meal plan that i used on chicken breasts and then supplemented it with the tuna so that it was easy to prepare in my dorm room...still in college....gonna graduate on time....and i've still got my health...now its all chicken...

the issue with this mentality is that when mercury poisoning creeps up on you you're ****ed because getting it out of you're system is near impossible and the symptoms present themselves when its too late to do anything. ignoring the warnings are a personal decision but be completely aware of what mercury will do to you if you do have a reaction.

    The food critics in norway

Well, i`ve sent a mail to the people that has to do with foods and stuff in norway, don`t really know what they are called in english, anywho:

I asked whats the maximum of tunacans you can eat per day, without crossing the safety line, they wrote: If you keep it under 10 per day you should be fine, do to the standards they have in the malls here it is not allowed to put tuna with more than a sertant percentage of mercury in it, so that works out great for me.

Comsuming 2 cans pr day as a minimum tho.. in waater

    Exactly...

There are far more things that are hazardous to your health than tuna.
