    Cooking oats/Substitutions for oats?

So Perfect Beast (who rocks) gave me a real bulking diet for the first time in my life...and I'm trying to actually stick to it. He calls for 80g of oats twice per day.

    1) How do you really cook the oats? I weigh out the 80g and put them on the stove top with ~1cup of milk and just cook them for a few minutes. Note sure what they're supposed to look like when done.

    2) I find it very difficult to eat 80g of oats twice per day. I've asked PB what his opinion is on this, and I'd like yours too. Is there a substitute I can use, like rice?

    Thanks, guys!

you can put them in water and microwave them. then add milk. that is what i do when bulking. cinnamon and splenda makes for a tasty treat as well.

they should get a little thicker when cooked. old fashioned or steel cut oats take longer to cook. and generally the GI of oats lowers slightly when cooked.

    That's a lot o' oats.

I use Quaker Minute Oats. Put the oats in a bowl, cover with skim milk, and microwave for about a minute and a half. Shouldn't be too watery or too stiff.

Don't know what's an equivalent substitute. Beast should know. He knows practiacally everything.

as far as substitutes go. i find that tubers (potatoes) are the most beneficial carb source. there is more info regarding that in the Nark/Nova thread. personally, carb of choice here, is sweet potato.

6 egg whites and 40grams of oats, whick/mix with fork, fry like a pancake with Pam spray. You can adjust the egg whites to fit your needs. Tastes great with some sugar-free syrup!

I buy the 5minute oats. The instant has a higher GI and the 15 minute ones honestly just take too long for me and ALWAYS spill over. 5min ones are perfect. Get a huge bowl fill it up with water and oats and cook for 5min. Add cinnamon and splenda and you're set.

Cream of wheat or quinoa are good subistutes.

Try grits if you're looking for a substitute. I strongly prefer grits to oats.

because its a fast digesting carb and oats are slow digesting.

just do the instant oats. 60 seconds and put milk in it right away so it does not clump, and then just drink it. I get almost all my carbs from oats and sweet potatos (yams). I am using water now because I am cutting but oats really should 'nt be a problem
