Angry Talipia, you bastard...and we were so good together :(

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., July 9 (UPI) -- Farm-raised tilapia has very low levels of beneficial *****-3 fatty acids and, perhaps worse, very high levels of *****-6 fatty acids, U.S. researchers say.

Researchers at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C., say the combination of could be a potentially dangerous food source for some patients with heart disease, arthritis, asthma and other allergic and auto-immune diseases that are particularly vulnerable to an "exaggerated inflammatory response."

Inflammation is known to cause damage to blood vessels, the heart, lung and joint tissues, skin and the digestive tract, the researchers say.

"In the United States, tilapia has shown the biggest gains in popularity among seafood and this trend is expected to continue as consumption is projected to increase from 1.5 million tons in 2003 to 2.5 million tons by 2010," the researchers say in a statement.

Farm-raised tilapia, as well as farmed catfish, "have several fatty acid characteristics that would generally be considered by the scientific community as detrimental," the researchers sat.

The article, published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, says tilapia has higher levels of potentially detrimental long-chain *****-6 fatty acids than 80-percent-lean hamburger, doughnuts and pork bacon.

Do you have a condition that makes you particularly vulnerable to an "exaggerated inflammatory response?"

Too bad. Frozen tilapia is the only fish that's still affordable.

Well, moderation should be the key and if you take in enough o m e ga 3 then it should balance out.

Everything we eat has potential to harm us now a days from beef to tuna, to veggies and fruit, to our water supply.

So are you guys going to eat talapia in moderation or do away with it all together?

I posted a study on my forum a month which said the same thing as this article.

Well, the same thing and more.

It investigated the 4 most commonly farmed fish: Atlantic salmon, trout, tilapia, and catfish

Anyone interested in reading it can PM me for the back link.

    Why change anything period?

    I wouldn't.

As long as you're supplementing with fish oil you're in a good place.

For some reason I get an error when trying to PM you, regardless, if you could post the link I think some (myself included) would find it useful and if not PM it if you have time.

So you are saying that *****-3 fatty acids from the fish oil will help offset the *****-6 from the talapia? Also, can you post the link on this thread, I would love to read it. Thanks Nark

I forwarded the link to you via PM... You can forward if you like.

The reason why you, and others, get error messages when trying to PM me is because I have PMs restricted to those on my friends list only.

I've gotten some weird PMs in the past...so i selected that option to prevent such.

Agreed! Farm raised fish have a 1/3 to 1/2 more fat than wild. Can be tricky if youre very concerned with your macros, like most of us are.

Also, in most farms, the Talipia are kept seperate in the waste water tanks to feed off the waste of the other fish. All they eat is crap! Then they are sent to market. Not the kind of food I want.
