    PWO shake, using Maltodextrin

i bought maltodextrin (complex carb in powder form made from corn) 50g carbs per scoop, 2g sugar, just wondering if this is a good carb replacement for PWO shake instead of dogging like 2 handfulls of dried cranberries and a banana with it. and can it be used as a replacement for a carb meal since its quick and easy

Yeah that would be a good choice to use for post workout.

A lot of people use high glycemic carbs PWO to cause an insulin spike and recharge the liver's glycogen reserve.

Some people feel that regular sources of carbs like oats or sweet potatoes acheive the same thing.

Using maltodextrin is just easier for me PWO to mix it with my protein.

PWO is probably the only time you should be using high glycemic carbs.

I really hate maltodextrin. Even though it is classified as complex carbohydrate, it acts like a simple carbohydrate in the body.

It is very high Glycemic Index, nearly as high as straight sugar. The only time you could justify this, as TechTonic posted, is post work out(debatable). Any other time it is absolutely horrible.

I personally think that your cranberries and bananas are much better.

Ive still got about 2Kg's of dextrose in my cupboard if you want it! It's probably about a year old though lol

I hate the stuff too, oats have replaced my dex.

well i figured id throw in about a scoop (33g) of dextrose, and then i just eat a serving of fruit with my PWO, but its a pain to bring the fruit in my car with me so i take the shake with me and then when i get home i have a banana or some dried cranberries to make up the rest of 60g of carbs i try to digest with my PWO
