How many calories are burned during sleep on average?

I know that during sleep the metabolism slows down, but how many calories on average can you expect to use while sleeping for an extended (5 hours +) period of time compared to being awake but idling (ie, watching tv) for the same period of time?

It would vary on a per person basis. But, if you slept for 8 hours, I would think it would be a number close to: your Basal Metabolic Rate divided by 3.

(Not exact, but it would give you a good idea)

I can do the math on this. My BMR without activity is 2100. With activity multiplier it is 2900. I sleep 7 hours a day. That means I am using 87.5 hour while sleeping and 134.5 hour while awake???

it's much more complicated, but we are going for rough estimates

if you wanted an exact measurement you'd have to know your
    metabolic rate during sleep
    hours of sleep
when you entered REM sleep(as i believe when you enter REM your metabolism lowers again)

    variables like that

I burn at lot less when I sleep, but I burn more over the course of the day.
You see, I do this form of high intensity interval sleeping. I sleep balls to the wall for a bunch of short periods. Don't be fooled, it isnt just like taking naps. No sir, balls to the wall sleeping. People call me crazy; their like dude, you can't sleep here. But when its time to sleep, I gotta do my business. In each interval, my body is recovering so hard, that afterwards, I need to kind of chill out, but my body is just burning mega calories. PLus there is the weight of the helmet I am wearing, for when it happens near sharp corners. That thing is pretty heavy. Gives me a nice nieck pump. How much calories do you think I can burn with my neck while I am sleeping?
