    Tuna, myth?

Okay so i was chatting to a customer the other day (I'm a capet fitter) and he was telling me you should only have 3 tins of tuna a week because it contains some sort of metal in it.

Is this true, should i only have 3 tins a week? would having more than 3 even do any damage to me?

It's abit of a bore really because tuna imo is a very fast sorce of protine for me, just crack to lid of and eat straight out of the can, job done.

Ive heard this as well. Its about the mercury.

The way i see it is we all have heaps of tuna each week, thousands of bbers around the world and no complaints or deaths from tuna poisoning so far.

    yeah he's speaking of mercury.
if i undertsand it you are fine unless your main source of protien is tuna.
i eat two servings a day and haven't died yet.

I actually sent a message to the food ministry here in Norway (our food are checked very thourough, and I asked if there was any problems with eating 3 cans per day (360g of tuna), and he said no, I am fine. I'll live to see another day.

If there were so much murcery that you could'nt have more then 3 cans per week, they would not be allowed to sell it.

You will be fine consuming 3 cans or less a day of tuna. What your friend is referring to is the mercury content. If this is of concern, eat the chunk lite tuna instead of the albacore as the chunk lite contains less traces of mercury.

    tuna myth

The tuna myth is false. The tuna that comes in a can is almost always from farmed tuna, not ocean tuna. The tuna in the ocean are the ones that "may" contain high levels of mercury, while the farmed tuna has not had the same exposure to the heavy metals of the ocean tuna. Hope this makes sense

I dont think this is true...

Do you know specifically of any companies that provide canned farmed raised tuna?

The following all catch theirs wild:

    Starkist (H.J. Heinz)
    Empress (Mitsui Foods Inc., USA)
    Chicken of the Sea
    Bumble Bee
Deep Sea Tongol (imported by Humble Whole Foods)
Ocean Light (imported by Humble Whole Foods)
    Captain's Choice (Safeway brand)
    Natural Sea (Cornucopia Natural Foods)

the idea is heavy metals (like mercury) get into the water supply mainly thanks to the Japs and if you remember your biology a thing in the food chain called biomagnification takes place. basically the bigger the fish, the more containments its likely to have in it. tuna is a big fish, many species of tuna are bigger than ronnie coleman in his prime but canned tuna is usually the smaller tunas and scrappier stuff and has shown to have less heavy metal than a tuna steak for example.

its usually only a concern for pregnant or nursing women and all the good fats in tuna outweigh any negatives IMO. I what do more people die of? Years and years of mercury toxicity buildup or heart disease from not eating enough fish??

are some of you guys really eating a couple cans a day? I know tuna's a lean protein source, but what's the point of consuming it almost as often as chicken, especially when tuna out of a can tastes like ass?

Seriously? Tuna has so much more to offer. If you dont eat it you will die from lack of mercury....haha. JK, but seriously its so much easier to eat.And tastes good...mmmm yumm. compare the two and see what you find out.

Dear, Lord, how many more times will we see a thread like this. You should use the search function more often. I don't mean to sound rude, but there have been a lot of threads covering this topic. I have eaten 2 cans of tuna for the past 4 years, and I'm goooooooood.

I heard the old silver fillings they used to have for teeth were more dangerous when it comes to mercury than anything you could get from tuna. My buddy is a dentist and he actually had people who wanted to have thier old fillings replaced becasue they feared for this.
