Tilapia debate: high ***** 6's?
i go through alot of tilapia, chicken has faded out for me, regardless here is what i have been informed of. A co-worker brought to my attention an article saying that farm raised tilapia that are fed a corn based diet result in a higher ratio of ***** 6's to ***** 3's, resulting in saturated fat. I tried to find the article and this was all i could get without signing up on the site
study: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science...f004141f810772
where link was found by co-worker: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/545277
any thoughts? opinions?

Yes any farm raised animal is typically higher in w-6 than w-3.
But saying that results in higher saturated fats? That makes absolutely no sense. w-3 and 2-6 fatty acids are both REQUIRED by the body. They are both essential man, sure I definitely advocate a higher w-3 percentage in your diet, but w-6 are not BAD for you...saturated fat isnt even bad for you.
It's all about the right amounts.

i thought saturated fat was bad for the heart, and according to the study " these data reveal that marked changes in the fishing industry during the past decade have produced widely eaten fish that have fatty acid characteristics that are generally accepted to be inflammatory by the health care community." i realize some saturated fat is necessary, but for the most part to stay away from it

Yes w-6 fatty acids do provoke the inflammatory response in the body...point being?
You know you require an inflammatory response for proper reaction to trauma and illness in the body right? w-6 convert to series II prostaglandins in the body which increase inflammation in order to promote a sort of defense mechanism in the body. So as I stated before they ARE required...you do not need a lot of them but you do need them.
And as for saturated fat...well you just said it yourself...some is required; and some can be good.
So as I stated previously it is all about the proper amounts. Dont stay away from a food because it contains w-6 or saturated fat. Stay away from it if its OVERLY high in them or during certain feeding times when they are not going to be beneficial towards your goals.

i dont believe ***** 6 are considered essential are they bino ? ..the body can synthesize FA's to produce ***** 6 & 9 fa's ..not true with ***** 3. Just curious.....

Pro inflammatory compounds that come from *****-6 (Arachidonic acid n-6) n-6 prostaglandin and n-6 leukotriene hormones are all implicated in many negative inflammatory process that include arterial wall damage, asthma ect. Many pharmo's target the Arachidonic acid Pathway which is typically overactive in the American diet of fatty meat sources such as red meats. *****-6 is an essential fatty acid and should have a ratio with *****-3 of 4 to 1 by most medical sources. Typically americans have ratios of 10-1 or higher. This is been shown in medical studies to have very real health impacts.
Keep in mind *****-6 FA are important for normal inflammation and immune health. Its only when the intake of *****-6 greatly increases over *****-3 that problems can arise. ***** 3 FA have a controlling effect on ***** 6 and its byproducts. The interplay between the two nutrients is very complicated and is not fully understood by the medical literature to date.
