The more hydrated you are the more your body flushes out naturally. If you are having some major water retention issues simply drinking more water is not going to alleviate the problem though.

Water is easilly the bodies best natural diuretic.

Fireguy nailed it, drink more water and you increase urine ouput, UNLESS you have a medical problem and passing urine is not possible, or the function is decreased.

But for the simple people who arent on medication for kidney related problems or a chemical diuretic that interferes with natural pathways than just increase your water intake.

Its counter-intuitive to some people, same with salt. Yes salt "helps" you hold on to water but we REQUIRE it, many people drop salt in their diet in hopes of getting rid of water retention, but the problem is you arent getting to the root of the problem (in most cases).

Low salt in take will cause an acidic builup inside cells (in case you werent sure, this is not a good thing), but your body will begin to collect salt when water intake is low so it can keep all the water in the body it can. A survival type mechanism because we so strongly need water for proper cell function and respiration. So, your body takes this fluid its holding onto and forces some of the clean water from it into the cells.

The reason I say FORCE water into the cell is because it has to, its like a water filtration system for your city. There may be no access to clean water but you can force water through filters or reverse osmosis in order to clean it and make it safe for the body. Well you body does this inside on a cellular level...the forcing nature is what causes a rise in blood pressure the usually acompanies edema. This is why docs give you diuretics when you have high blood pressure.

So you wanna get rid of that toxic water that you body is holding onto by gradually increasing your water intake and increasing urine output at the same time.

I say gradual because for people who are seriously dehydrated you dont jus wanna go and drink gallons of water or you may have too much in your lungs. Also when water is increased drastically it can flush out too much salt.

But as long as your keep water constantly flowing in your body it will keep refreshing the water in your cells, so its cleaner.
