    Artificial Sweeteners and Insulin Spikes

I've been reading so much stuff on the internet about this issue. But as we all know there's lots of crap floating around out there.

It makes sense that artificial sweeteners can cause an insulin spike, but how significant would it be? Can it really screw a diet up? The general idea is that even though our bodies won't be getting any fast-acting sugars, the glucose that's already in the bloodstream would be used, leaving us drained.

So if anybody has an idea about this subject, please share.

    Not me?

I just thought I'd share this since I know lots of people use Splenda and other sweeteners unreservedly.

Uhm, I'm pretty sure Carbs are needed for an insulin spike.

Since artificial sweeteners do not have any carbs I don't think an insulin spike is possible. It just doesn't make sense.

Bump for more info from experts.

Well i'm no bodybuilding expert, but I've taken more than my share of biology-related courses.

The data is there. Artificial sweeteners do cause insulin spikes. One explanation is that the sweet taste simulates our taste receptors and, thus, insulin is released. This is fact; not a theory.

These results suggest that consumption of products containing artificial sweeteners may lead to increased body weight and obesity by interfering with fundamental homeostatic, physiological processes.
It makes sense since artificial sweeteners weren't around when the first mammal appeared.

So, yeah, you don't actually need carbs for an insulin spike.

I limit myself to 1 sweetener packet at a time while cutting (added to my oats), and try to avoid artificial sweeteners. Look at the ingredients in Splenda: 1)Dextrose, 2) Maltodextrin 3) Sucralose. That's in the order as it appears (generic Walmart version, "Altern") in the ingredients listing. Sure it's a pretty small amount but I've seen people be more anal while sticking to a diet, but eat 5 of those packets in 1 sitting and I'd think that it would create a small insulin spike. What do you think lifters use to spike insulin PWO???? Of course the amount used by BBers is much more than that contained in a few packets of sweetener but you get the point.

I'm not talking about the amount of dextrose or maltodextrin found in Splenda packets. I'm talking about pure Sucralose or Aspartame.

    Totally AGREE!
Regarding your last post and aspartame, are there still people who use it? Only those who wants to commit suicide in a long range...
